Dunno whether it's sad or beautiful, maybe both, but there are very few things I have spent more of my life arguing about than this.

Ron Guenther also on that list.
That 2010-11 team was the could of, would of, should of’est team there ever was imo

I've contended (half jokingly but half serious) that good ole RG was the worst AD at a power conference school. Some good happened but he really didn't do anything to advance the brand of U of I athletics. Facilities were a disaster relative to rest of league, football was a train wreck, etc.

What could have been with Jereme Richmond...which makes me wonder what the 2011-2012 team could have been like if Richmond plays a second year.
There were murmurings about Jereme being troubled for a long time before he even enrolled. I don't think he would have ever made it through a 2nd year even if that was an option. Dark dark times.

Yup, from everything I have heard from behind the scenes, what would have improved the team is not Richmond playing two seasons, but zero.

He was a nightmare behind the scenes, and again, it's one of those Weber things, talented players were so hard for him to acquire that he wasn't in a position to just walk away, which I think a lot of other coaches would have done before he ever made it to campus.

I hesitate to draw too many parallels to Skyy Clark, but it really does show the difference with Underwood. Just waltzed into that recruitment and took the player seemingly overnight, the marriage fell apart quickly, and we moved right along to the next thing.

It’s silly to think we should rest a starter against a predicted tournament team on the road because “we should beat them regardless”

There’s far more reasons than just a singular game as well.

We’ve had guys in and out all year, I want not only continuity, but more looks from the staff to evaluate lineups/rotations.

That said, high ankle sprain. If he’s not healthy enough to go, or is hobbled in a way where it doesn’t help the team. Rest him.

baker-mazara is B1G first team all-dirty. Don't know too much about Musselman, but I know more about his dad.

Can you say Ron Behagen ? Corky Taylor ? I can.

For baseball fans who remember Billy Martin, he and Bill Musselman were good friends dating to when they both were in Minnesota. They were very similar as far as their intense temperament. Their friendship once led indirectly to a characteristic Billy Martin incident. He traveled to Reno to help out his friend by doing a game appearance for a team Musselman coached. A reporter approached Martin at the hotel bar and the reporter ended up punched out and with a legal settlement.

Of course. But my point lies on an assumption that he is cleared to play. I agree at this point he shouldn’t risk it

“We weren’t even sure if [NAME] was going to play tonight, but here he is with 26 points in 37 minutes against Illinois!” is a song I’ve heard a few times before.

When did this occur?

Just can't recall this happening with regularity... but, since it does, maybe you can name off the many times it happened?

We actually beat a higher ranked team that year in UNLV, too bad we could not beat KU in the Round of 32. We wore out that game as Weber played 6 guys 23 plus minutes and KU played 8 guys. The killed us on the boards. Close at half but KU throttled us in the 2nd half. If we could have beat KU, we had Richmond in the S16 and VCU in the E8. Missed opportunity

Jim Brewer? And, especially, Dave Winfield? Yes, that Dave Winfield.

Biggest college basketball atrocity of my lifetime. And not a single thug was punished, including Musselman, who skipped town a season later, with the NCAA on his heels. It found (IIRC) nearly 120 program violations.

I like Eric. He's a lot like his dad in intensity, but he appears to be a decent man, unlike his win-at-all-costs, losing-is-worse-than-death pops.

There are periods when I'm reading the Board and am thankful that the foundation of my Illini basketball fandom was the early '80s.

This is one of them. Thank goodness I was sufficiently busy from 2006-17 that I can just glide over that unfortunate time and pick up in 2018 as life began to open up again.

Man, just imagine being a kid growing up in the glory years that were Self's tenure here, culminating in the 04-05 team solidifying your fandom for life.... and then being a student from 2013-2017..... 🤮

Dark times I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
