IL metro east burbs of St. Louis
Not having kept up with local HS sports much recently I just learned tonight/this morning that their is some major shake ups going on in HS conferences here in the Metro East/Southern IL.

1a) This is the last year of the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC): Mascoutah & Triad are moving to the Southwestern Conference (SWC).
1b) Collinsville is moving it's Football program back into the SWC (all other sports already in SWC) and Granite City is rejoining the SWC in all sports.
1c) Projected FB divisions of. Black Division (Large Schools): Belleville East, Belleville West, East St. Louis, Edwardsville, & O'Fallon. Gold Division (Smaller Schools): Alton, Collinsville, Granite City, Mascoutah & Triad.

2a) Jerseyville, Waterloo and Civic Memorial (Bethalto) are moving to the Cahokia Conference (CC).
2b) Centralia is moving from the South Seven (S7) to the Cahokia Conference.
2c) Roxanna tried to move their FB program to a different division within the CC but instead got voted out of the conference all together by the other schools. They are now looking for a new conference to call home.
2d) Already a large conference just getting larger. Not even going to try and guess what the divisions for FB might look like next year.

3) Highland is moving to the South Seven conference after the MVC's dissolution.

4) Alton Marquette Catholic, Belleville Altoff Catholic, Madison, Mater Dei and Roxanna are forming a football only conference, the Metro Valley Conference. Plans to add a 6th school to make scheduling easier.

Part of me is sad to see the MVC go away. I graduated from OTHS (O'Fallon Township HS) and for my Fr/So years we were in the MVC and I grew up watching O'Fallon in the MVC. My Jr./Sr. years we were in the South Seven. We were basically forced out of the MVC by the smaller schools. Specifically East Alton-Wood River and Roxanna. If we didn't leave on our own they were going to leave because we were too big of a school for them. Then those little turds left the MVC a few years later anyways.

I am really glad to see Mascoutah joining the SWC because that was the biggest, most heated, most hated, Meet Me in the Pizza Hut Parking Lot (MMitPHPL) type of rivalry O'Fallon had in Football and Basketball. I really hope they add a permanent rivalry type game in FB between divisions so O'Fallon and Mascoutah can always play.

On a side note it's kind of interesting that O'Fallon was a Founding member of both the Cahokia Conference and the Mississippi Valley Conference and if the SWC claims it's beginnings back to the mid 1920's before it dissolved and reformed again then O'Fallon would technically be a Founding member of it as well even though OTHS was only in it for 1 year before joining Freeburg and others to form the Cahokia Conference. lol

Anyways hope this might of been of some interest for some of you.

Go Illini! I L L

If this thread is a catch all for HS sports, I think I’ve seen something that is pretty phenomenal for Class A small school basketball. And that is the Lawrenceville Indians. They are ranked #2 in the state. What makes them special though is that they are the first small school team I’ve seen that dunks as much as I can remember. And I mean every fast break run out they are going for dunks. They run half court alley oop plays for dunks. They miss dunks. They are a pretty good long athletic team but it’s the dunking you just don’t expect to see at that level of ball. And it’s from guys that are 6-3 to 6-5.

It's been a while since they were the king of HS basketball in Illinois. 2 classes at the time and the Lawrenceville people I worked with were wanting to play the 2A state champions. Some tremendous teams.

Don't if it belongs here on a new IHSA Football Thread (old one is closed), apparently the school when they changed the playoff format forgot to ask the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and forgot to the change the preseason....

The IHSA has basically been out to lunch on most everything since they expanded basketball to 4 classes in 2008. They lost the plot imo. This football playoff expansion is just more along that line. We already have plenty of 56-3 first round games so lets have 80 more of em. Sounds brilliant.

The IHSA admin just counted the votes. The member schools made the choice.

Bringing this one back to life for any post season Illinois high school basketball chat as girls post season started this week & boys next week. I don't follow it like I used to in the 2 class days but part of me still loves IHSA post season basketball.

Haven't seen many games this year as the Springfield IL area is somewhat devoid of real high end teams. I did see Warrensburg Latham at Christmas time. Pretty solid 2A team. Also went to a few games of the Riverton Shootout this past Saturday. Williamsville & Riverton were both good 2A teams. Riverton very height challenged but have a spectacular shooter named Julian Rice who went for 43 points on Saturday.

Also saw Bluefield Weber there who has Nathan Marlowe who will end up as probably the 2nd all time scorer in state history by end of this year. They are a real solid 1A team tho they lost to Riverton in a good game on Saturday.

In the bigger schools I have not seen Decatur MacArthur but they only have 1 loss. May get to see them if they advance to the Springfield super sectional in a couple weeks.

Interested in other observations from high school fans.

There's not a 2A Supersectional at the BOS Center anymore so the teams in central Illinois got split up. The teams in east central Illinois go to Pontiac for the super. The teams in the Springfield area have to go to Carbondale.
Macarthur is 3A though. That one is still in Springfield. If form holds it will be them vs East St Louis which from what I have heard should be a highly entertaining track meet on the basketball floor. Love to watch those kind of games.

Yes - 2A is absurd. If someone from the Springfield-ish area makes the super they get a 3 hour drive to Carbondale as their reward. One of the MANY flaws with 4 class basketball. Everything above 1A (especially 2A & 4A) face absurd drives sometimes even at the regional level. A super should not be a 3 hour trip. It wouldn't be if we still had 8 of em per 2 classes spread somewhat sensibly around the state.

But that horse has been beaten to death. I think I've beat it a couple thousand times myself over the years.

Agreed. That being said, it is nice to see that there are going to be supersectionals back in Macomb and Charleston this year. I'm pretty sure it's the first time EIU has hosted it in close to 20 years. For the longest time they couldn't because the OVC still had 1st round conference tournament games at home which were normally the same night as the supersectional.

I used to go to the Macomb super when in high school, college & occasionally in later years. I also heard of another absurd assignment last night. 1A Springfield Calvary has to travel for a regional to Payson (my alma mater) which is about 10 miles from Quincy in far western Illinois. On a school bus that's a 2 hour trip for a regional. Just silly.

I officiated IHSA basketball for 22 years. I officiated Super-Sectionals at Illinois College in Jacksonville, at UIS in Springfield, and a couple at Pontiac HS. The ones on the college campuses definitely had more of the big-time post-season vibe. The ones at Pontiac were more of just a typical Friday night varsity game.

And it doesn't get much closer for them if they make it to the sectional that's in Nokomis.

Did you ever officiate at the Jacksonville Bowl? That one would be a whole different vibe than the others.

Never got the opportunity to work in the Jacksonville Bowl, but always wanted to. The only time that I officiated in Jacksonville was the Super-Sectional at Illinois College ... which was an extremely nice facility.

I went to the Supersectional at UIS, in Springfield, back when Myers Leonard played and enjoyed it. If I recall correctly is was packed and almost too small.

I went to the Supersectional there as well once but it wasn't for that game. It was back in 2014 when my high school alma mater played Paris. My alma mater is 30 minutes from Springfield and we arrived early because of how packed we knew it was going to be just to get in. From what I recall, all but one section of the gym were supporters of my high school. There was one section behind the Paris bench that was their students and supporters but the rest was us.

There are several very good 1A teams in the southern part of Illinois. Lawrenceville among them. Woodlawn, Goreville, and Weber Township just to name 3 others. I believe Goreville defeated Lawrenceville in a Saturday shootout at Benton recently. I saw Lawrenceville play last Tuesday night. It probably was not one of their better efforts, but I agree they are very good. By the way Weber has a player, Nathan Marlowe, who could very well end up with the second most points for a career in Illinois high school history behind Tamms high school graduate, SIU alum, and former NBA St. Louis Hawks player, Charlie Vaughan.

I saw that Marlowe kid a couple weeks ago at the Riverton Shootout. He had like 31 but they lost to Riverton. Riverton had a kid named Julian Rice who was nuclear from 3 that night. He went for 43 points & at one point I think he made 8 or 9 in a row from deep. Wild game. Riverton scored 68 that night. One with 43, one with 21 & 2 others with 2 points each. Not much balance.

Lawrenceville being good again is a throwback to the early 80's when the Mule led them to back to back undefeated state title seasons. The glory days of Illinois high school ball.

So you were at the game where Myers teabagged the opposing player on the dunk. I was to the side of the basket where that happened basically right in front of me.

Funniest part is there was a St Theresa fan behind me who was taunting him "come on big guy lets see what you got" as Myers was dribbling upcourt. After he hurdled/teabaggd the kid for a vicious dunk, the guy behind me got very quiet.

The time format for these 2 state weekends is beyond the dumbest thing ever. Playing the 3rd place games in prime time on Thursday & Friday is silly. You can debate whether the 3rd place games are still worthwhile. I'm fine with em. But don't play em in prime time when potential casual fans want to watch the semi finals.

I say play 1A & 2A semis on Thursday. 1A & 2A 3rd place starting at 9:00am on Friday. Then 3A & 4A semis in afternoon & night. 3A & 4A 3rd place 9:00am Saturday & the title games starting after that.

It's like someone in Bloomington at IHSA headquarters is devising a format intentionally trying to diminish in person attendance & TV viewership. Crazy town IMO.
