Illinois #10 in 2/23 AP Poll

So we're still number 10. I guess when 16 of 25 teams lose in the same week, ya don't really see much movement? I thought we would've fallen to at LEAST 12 or 13, but I guess a 1-point OT loss(can we just make OT games illegal for the rest of the season, please?) and absolutely eviscerating USC counted enough to keep us where we were last week. Considering how I felt after Saturday's game, I'll take it!

Really? They have a NET in the low 40s. If they do not win their tourney, they are likely not even getting selected for the NCAAT. I think the voters are actually giving them massive props with the ranking.

What they have done this year is great and all, but they are 1-0 against Quad 2 opponents and 23-0 in Q3/Q4 games. They even have 3 games that do not classify on the quad system.

Here's my fundamental issue.

If your AP Poll vote is just rehashing what KenPom and the NET already say, what the heck do I need the AP Poll for?

Miami isn't that good, in a way we would have recognized even in 1997 or whatever. But being undefeated this late in the season is narratively interesting, and impressive, and they deserve to be at least around the Top 15 in the AP Poll, because the swingy, vibes-based AP Poll is the part of the system *designed* to recognize what they're doing.

Well if that were the case, then they would not be ranked in either the AP or Coaches poll.

I think what we are seeing is that coaches and the general sports writer are seeing that Miami is putting together quite a great season, but their job is to still put together a ranking list of the top teams. I find it hard to find anybody that would logically argue that Miami is one of the top 15 teams in the country. Maybe if they had at least one marquis power conference win, then that would justify a top 15 ranking. Their best win is at home against Akron. Don't get me wrong, going undefeated to this point in a season is impressive. The fact that they are getting ranked 20+ spots higher than their metrics rankings suggest to me that your "vibes-based" ranking system is actually working.

Still No. 4 in NET, so we have that.
All we would have needed was about 10 more points in regulation and we would have only 1 loss.
The record doesn't reflect how good we really are. Stay positive and beat Michigan - I care a lot more about that game than the few that have slipped away from us.

I don't actually think the AP Poll is designed to weight any specific way of voting over any other way of voting - in fact very much the opposite. It's designed to encompass as many different individual thought processes as possible into the closest approximation of the general zeitgeist. It does this like any other poll - tries to get a representative sample of its defined larger group (in this instance, sports writers and broadcasters who cover college basketball), to represent as close an approximation as possible of the whole. There is definitely a segment of those that cover college basketball that put a lot of stock into KP and Torvik and NET other such metrics, and that segment is also represented in the AP voter base. By design.
