Props to Alabama. They get one of their top players ARRESTED in the days leading up to the tournament. Earlier in the season, their team is decimated by injuries. Yet it looks like they're headed to the S16.

No they don't. They would have to play us or Houston to get there.

By seeds they do.

Nebraska gets the #9 then either #3/#2.
Illinois gets the #2, then either the #4/#9.

Nebraska would play max of 12 (total seed lines) or 11.

Illinois would get 11 or 6.

Lower number is the tougher path.

Kentucky: All that NIL and that's the roster Pope constructed.

I think this narrative is being over blown. They had TWO starters in Lowe and Quaintance not play the whole year.

That’s probably 2 of their 3 highest paid guys (along with Oweh).

No they don't. They have a clearer path to the Elite 8 but not the Final 4. If they win they have to face a 2 or 3 seed or for that matter a seed higher than their seed. The clearer path belongs to the team that wins between us and Houston.

How on earth does TTU look this bad?
They lost their last 3 games of the season before the tournament. It's like when a player gets a sprained ankle during the middle of a game and it playing off of adrenaline for the rest of that game then the next game they aren't as effective or have to miss a couple of games. That's how TT was for those first few games after Toppin got hurt but once things settled down the effect of that injury in those last 3 games plus this one tonight start to show up.

I feel that could happen to Iowa St if Jefferson doesn't come back. As the opponents get tougher that injury is going to exploit a lot of things.

Illinois has played 9 games this year against half of the Sweet 16 field.

Nebraska x 2
Purdue
Michigan State
Michigan
Iowa
Alabama
UConn
Tennessee

With UConn/UCLA and Bama/Texas Tech rounding out Sunday night, we’ve technically played 11 games against the final 18 teams.

Say what you will about our record in close games… we’re certainly battle tested.

Plus they played Duke last year, Arkansas and Iowa State two years ago, Texas three years ago, Houston 4 years ago, and Arizona 5 years ago.

They regularly schedule and play the modern day elite programs.

I want to give props to Sandfort (yesterday) and Stirtz, both team leaders and gunners who passed up hero ball opportunities to get an assist on last second game winners. Love the B1G doing well, and love that we are doing well with (mostly) good basketball and (mostly) good coaching. Hopefully Hoiberg and McCollum have long careers and make me forget about that Michigan state guy with the Christmas sweaters. And hopefully they enjoy their second and third place finishes behind Illinois.

That Iowa Florida game was some of the most entertaining basketball I've seen all season. Just the contrast in styles but at the same time, Iowa playing faster than they did in the Clemson game which seemed like the same slugfest that we saw earlier when they played Nebraska in Iowa City. McCollum is one impressive coach to pull that off in that home Florida crowd. I don't root for Iowa and don't particularly care for their win but give them a lot of credit b/c they are clearly the less talented team but McCollum makes up for it with his coaching which is a point I brought up on the coaching carousel thread a week or two ago when talking about how he is leaps and bounds ahead of Mike Rhoades at Penn St. That Nebraska-Iowa came is going to be fun to watch. The rest of the country might not realize it but that is going to be a good watch

I had forgotten that Iowa hasn't made it past the first weekend since the late 90s. I thought it was when Luke Recker was there with Steve Alford but apparently it was the year before Alford became the coach. Man that's a long time ago

Finally, though, a real upset in the 2nd round. Yes, it was Iowa, but that was about a 20% chance of happening. Not quite the High Point (15%) win, but last year was so chalky and top heavy I was starting to get concerned that the best teams were just not going to be at risk of being upset anymore.

Granted, there is still clearly a top tier of 3 teams, and that just cemented it.

On the plus side, Illinois' path to the championship is no longer quite the nightmare gauntlet it looked like it might be (6th best team with a chance to have to go through 4 of the 5 teams ahead of them to win it).
Houston is the nightmare gauntlet and they were always going to be the bigger nightmare than Florida. Houston is our Elite 8 matchup just like UCONN two years ago

why is the game in Tampa tipping at 10:10pm while the sun is still up here in California and the game in San Diego is 7 minutes from being complete?
It's because of the TV decisionmakers. They decided that Kansas-St John's needed to be a CBS nationally televised game b/c it would garner more viewers than any of the other matchups regardless of location. 2nd game from San Diego was 30 mins after the KU-St Johns ending...that simple

I mean playing Iowa + Illinois or Iowa + Houston is an easier path than playing Houston + Nebraska. Iowa is clearly the worst team out of the four and Nebraska is obviously guaranteed to play them. So I would agree they have the easier path.
