No idea if this guy has any credibility or if this list is based on reality or not. I just thought Bobby Hurley at Butler was funny.

Fennel is interesting. Had never heard of him until he was mentioned as a potential candidate for Oregon State job. Interesting guy who got started in coaching late (early 30s I think).

Nope. McCollum paid his dues. Dude was a successful coach at Northwest MO St and Drake. Parlayed that into Iowa. Coached his tail off to get into tournament and into Sweet 16. Not even close to the son of Satan. Steven Pearl got his job from daddy with no experience.

Satan Jr was in like medical sales I think until Satan hired him …

Satan waits until the last possible minute to ensure Satan Jr got the job …

Auburn is POVERTY … Spent more than us this year and couldn’t even make the tournament …

And I was so happy to see it … 😎

Why are we not referring to the son of Satan as the Antichrist?

Right and this illustrates my point about McCollum. Steven Pearl should not be on anyone's radar as a high major head coach candidate. I doubt there's anybody on this website that disagrees. Auburn got stuck with him and he failed this season. Failed. But he did beat Florida.

I'm not saying McCollum is as bad as Steven Pearl. Obviously he is better. In fact I think he's probably a good coach. But my whole point was that if UNC is looking at him after this Florida win, and would not have been looking at him if he'd lost that game, then that's crazy, because it's one game. In one game crazy things happen. Like Steven Pearl beating Florida.

Elaborate?
Our funds are limited - in order to make a coaching change we would need to buyout are current coach and some of his assistants. As well as pay for the buyout for an Oats or a Golden - we are in the low $40mm range.

But there is a larger issue here. We don't generate the type of revenue or donor giving that a Michigan, Duke, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, Florida, USC, Kansas and several others do. The net of that permeates the entire athletic department. Our overall budget for NCAA collegiate athletics is in the bottom third of the B1G.

And that impacts what we can spend on players. I read about "money we are paying Andrej Stojakovic" and then ask for the actual number or data citing, and there are none.

So the reason Bill Self and Lon Kruger left, the reason we wound up with Bruce Weber and Jon Groce is we don't have the resources other schools have. So we aren't going to attract any of the above coaches.

Two positives here though:

I1) We have one of the top 5 ADs in the country and he is an Illinois Alum
(2) As our footbal program improves... so will the money. As to why we don't sell out every home football game? beats me. But Whitman is getting donors (finally) and has litterally dragged out of the bottom 4 as it relates to NIL, revenue shareing anc collectives.

I'm guessing due to the associated scandal baggage. IL wouldn't want the reputation hit.

That and the fact those are elite, like top 3 candidates. When has Illinois ever hired that level of coaching candidate? (Self wasn’t thought of in that way, we hired him from Tulsa so it’s not him)

Far more likely we’d hire someone from a mid-major school like we always have. That’s not a bad thing, and I’m sure Josh would get the best guy possible.

We hired Brad from Oklahoma State. It's funny, there's a convo in this thread about hiring coaches after one season at a high major when that's exactly what we did. Brad had an impeccable record at Stephen F. Austin, including a massive upset in the tourney. Goes to OSU and turns that team around in one season, and Josh comes to grab Brad out from under T. Boone Pickens' nose. Worked out pretty well.

Agreed. Guy had 1 year of high major experience and has worked out great so far. We’ve never went and plucked a top name in a cycle. So when people ask why we aren’t going to do that, that’s the obvious answer.

Josh would get us a fine replacement, it’s just not going to be the top 1, 2 guys in the cycle when one or multiple blue bloods also have openings in that same cycle. Even if money is roughly equal, does North Carolina land the elite guy or does Illinois?

It's not even super clear how those mechanics work anymore. Who are the top 1, 2 guys in the current cycle?

Anyway, let's just keep BU forever.
