Agreed. Guy had 1 year of high major experience and has worked out great so far. We’ve never went and plucked a top name in a cycle. So when people ask why we aren’t going to do that, that’s the obvious answer.

Josh would get us a fine replacement, it’s just not going to be the top 1, 2 guys in the cycle when one or multiple blue bloods also have openings in that same cycle. Even if money is roughly equal, does North Carolina land the elite guy or does Illinois?
Last years cycle indicates things may be changing. Do you go to the place with the passionate, yet mostly reasonable, fan base, or the one with outsized expectations? Do you go to the place with the AD that has shown they stand behind their coaches and work with them, or to the one who is more beholden/malleable to the donors will?

In the past KS and NC were prime choices because the bag networks pretty much guaranteed a roster few teams could compete against. It made meeting expectations significantly easier, and dramatically reduced the effort spent recruiting -- no need to scout and maintain relations with those 3rd/4th/5th choices. That advantage is gone. The downsides remain.

Do you remember all the backlash because so many thought Jimmy Collins should have gotten the job? Hiring a dude who made tourney 2x in 6 years isn't a "splash hire", sorry.
If memory serves me correctly, Chicago wanted Collins to replace Lou.

Not really related to this year's coaching cycle, but what is the temperature of the seat of Dennis Gates?

He's obviously been more successful than Cuonzo and has had them in the tourney three times in four years, including some big wins over teams like Kansas last year and Florida this year. After his first season, it seemed like he was going to be a major thorn in our side, but since then, we've dominated them.

But the NCAA performances have been really bad, and the one year they missed the tournament is in the running for the worst power-conference season of all time.

I know he has a highly ranked class coming in, but I have to imagine he needs to win at least one tourney game, or he's gone. @Indy Illini Fan

Florida working to lock Golden up for a long time …

Would make it nearly impossible for anyone to poach …
Makes sense for both parties, Golden has made it clear he prefers to do the "pursuing", not be pursued anyways

She’s on a LOT of lists … Josh isn’t just going to let her walk though …
Anybody know if she has any sort of non-compete clause? She’s building a pretty nice resume, I would think. I think Underwood and Bielema both have some non-compete terms in their contracts.

We hired Brad from Oklahoma State. It's funny, there's a convo in this thread about hiring coaches after one season at a high major when that's exactly what we did. Brad had an impeccable record at Stephen F. Austin, including a massive upset in the tourney. Goes to OSU and turns that team around in one season, and Josh comes to grab Brad out from under T. Boone Pickens' nose. Worked out pretty well.
that happened exactly 9 years ago & my son was a Sr there , and I texted him to tell him while he was driving back to campus from spring break in Fla

His buyout is like top 15 in the country I think ?

He’ll be around for a while …

As for Gates, some Mizzou alums/donors are grumbling. But giving at least one more year with some big rated recruits coming in. Rumor they may even extend him. In other words, no rush in changes.
Obviously $$$, but I struggle to understand why these recruits would come to mizzery...plenty of schools with money
