These are ALMOST as bad as..
#10 Loyola as an 8 seed in 21
#2(!) Houston as a 5 seed in 22 (I think they were #5 going into the tourney but still)
I wonder when this excuse narrative will end. Loyola was not under seeded. They were a 8/9 seed. They were not good. It was an embarrassing upset. Loyola were so poorly under seeded that they got beat by 12 seed in their next game. Unless Oregon St was also under seeded.

It was an amazing achievement, no doubt. But Stevens took over a very strong Butler program already known as a Cinderella, that was his 3rd and 4th year, a lot of luck involved in the tourney as we all know, and of course he did not in fact win a national championship.

What Cignetti did is impossible. His comps aren't coaches, it's Houdini, David Copperfield, Penn and Teller
Cugnetti had a pile of money from Mark Cuban to buy players with. He’s great but more Chris Angel.

No one has ever done what Cignetti did before and no one is ever going to do it again.

The only other sports comp that seems appropriate is Leicester City winning the Premier League (which was EVEN MORE unlikely from a statistical/betting odds perspective but also was a one-year wonder that immediately collapsed and never approached the same heights again, and wasn't the work of a single mastermind in the same way)
I can’t believe Curt Cignetti’s been posting on here this whole time.

I know LSU has a lot of money, but my goodness—between Lane and Wade, they’re looking at $45–65 million in NIL commitments, and that doesn’t even include Kim Mulkey, who you know is getting a significant amount as well. I’m honestly curious who their donors are that can supply that kind of cash, and how we could ever build something similar.

Where would $15 million put LSU men’s basketball nationally in terms of NIL? And how would that compare to Illinois? Also, do you think we could get close to $12–15 million this year if we make the Final Four?

The "upset era" of CBB is almost exactly bounded by the advent of one-and-dones at the beginning and the advent of free transfers and NIL on the back end.

Which makes sense. It started when the big schools started becoming unable to retain their best players and ended when they gained the ability to just buy the best players from the mid-major level instead.
Definitely a lot of correlation but there were still plenty of upsets in the late 90s and early 00s before the one and done era started with Oden and Durant.

You had Gonzaga break out and plenty of good mid major runs.

I think it's even more hurt now than the pre one and dones because mid majors are losing their best players since the best mid major teams were often made up of a bunch of upper classmen.

Actually LSU is 14th in the SEC in total men's basketball spend (coaches, players, travel, housing, etc.) @ 13.6mm. I agree the numbers getting tossed out in terms of buyouts and new contracts - not achievable for LSU right now.

We will get to $12-15mm next year in terms of player spend next year owing to this year's success regardless of whether we win tonight. We had one of the top 5 largest revenue years in the NCAA in 2025 - 2026. The collective, ticket and appearance revenue this year blew out thanks to a number of players.

Great questions!

In the not really news, news department…
Will Wade and LSU deserve each other. Sleazy program with sleazy car salesman type of coach. I saw the NC State AD's press conference and he was not pleased or happy with how it all played out. Wade is such a sleazebag that he didn't have enough guts to give his resignation through voice-to-voice or in person communication. It was an email from his agent to the AD. This was after they spoke about the state of the program and next steps on Tuesday.

I think NC State should go after Hubert Davis. I think Hubert should stick it to his alma mater who drove him out(whether it was warranted or not)

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, waddles like a duck, well……..

NC State knew what they were getting, but chose to hire him anyway. I’m sure they knew this could happen, but they rolled the dice anyway.
