The Nepo Son Handover always ends the same way.

Here's hoping we're a decade away from wrestling with that particular problem.
I do not suspect we will have that problem at Illinois.

I have zero issue if Tyler eventually came back around to a head coach position at Illinois way down the road, as long as he gets his first head coaching position elsewhere first. I think we are seeing him as a great commodity as an assistant coach at Illinois, but if he grows elsewhere as a head coach first, he could very well be a prime candidate for Illinois down the road.

And if we do, the son has shown he can run his own program away from his dad (which I think he can…..).

We are not going to have that problem as long as Whitman is in charge ...

However - if Tyler leaves the nest and proves himself as a HC at a mid major for a few years ... That is a different conversation ...
Yup. No issue with a dynasty/legacy as long as worth is independently shown and proven elsewhere.

No one gets to just "inherit" the HC gig with the Beloved

All lovely sentiments but the OTHER problem is that suddenly we don't want to lose him as our OC.

Don't forget Kim Mulkey. LSU sure is wildling. Lol.
Who could forget this?

It’s not a secret he didn’t have any fun this year …

He essentially has had Kellen handling the freshman all year …

Kelvin likes old teams … Kellen wanted to build it a different way …

It’s probably time for him to retire …
Totally agree and that all makes sense. He just strikes me as one of those guys who's going to have a really hard time stepping away even if he knows he should. And as much as I hate to admit it, what he's done at Houston is pretty remarkable.

It is a good "problem" to have when assistant coaches leave to take on head coaching positions.
I mean it is in a sense, but it is also a bad problem if suddenly our offense doesn't work as well. Assistant coaches who routinely mastermind offenses that are among the best in the nation (and with vastly different groups of players too) don't just grow on trees. It's good for him in the long run and good for us in the long run if he eventually wants to be the HC here. But make no mistake, it would be tough to replace his contribution in the short run.

In that case, I think he (Tyler) has to:
A. Make his peace with being a perpetual Illinois OC for this staff and those that follow
or
B. We (Illinois, and no, I don't speak for Josh or anyone else for that matter) have to make our peace with identifying a suitable replacement.

The risks are too high to gamble on the hopes that Tyler/0440 can handle the big boy chair without any proof. More often than not, the amazing specialist/ individual contributor aren't the best leader.

Would definitely be interesting to see how that coaching search would go, too. Would it end up as much of a disaster as UK's did, or would they get their top targets.
I hear that North Carolina’s coach is available. 😳

C. An apprenticeship training where he gets the chance, over many years, to prove he can actually do all aspects of the HC job.

This is how bright junior engineers get turned into company wide tech leaders.

The phases, for each area in the job are roughly:
1) Observe. Ask questions in private after the fact.
2) Lead easier cases under direct supervision (in the room).
3) Lead easier cases under indirect supervision.
Repeat 2-3 with harder and harder cases until they can do all of them w/o supervision.
