ESPN has Illinois 8th in their "Way-to-early" 2026-2027 rankings. They have UM at 1 and MSU 6th. Obviously doesn't factor in players coming and going via the portal/draft but nice to see pundits thinking highly of us.
Means absolutely NOTHING at this time

Michigan may lose their entire front line to the draft. Such rankings are irrelevant until at least after the portal closes.

The Athletic just dropped theirs. They have Illinois #1.

These are obviously silly, but it does further confirm that we have the existing pieces in place for a core unlike any other team right now.

Too low.

Illinois was in on the ground floor for John Blackwell. It was nowhere near a surprised that he hopped in the portal.

Now that he actually entered, the money is growing exponentially with some heavy hitters getting in.

Still think Illinois will be right there.
> this is the year we have more money than our peers
> make a wishlist of the stud guards entering the portal
> wait, other programs seem to have as much money as we have
> wait, other programs seem to have more money than we have
> we’re being outbid on our primary targets
> we’re losing guys we thought we would retain
> are we even going to make the tourney next year?
> okay, we landed a decent mid major player
> okay, we got a European I’ve never heard of
> practice reports sound optimistic
> pre-season top 15
> another loss in December to a top 10 team
> another sleepy Q2 loss in January
> small winning streak against top B1G teams in February
> definitely going to make the tournament
> okay, we’ll be a top 1, 2, 3 seed again
> let’s see if we can win it all this time

Purdue won the Big Ten Tournament, played in the Elite 8 and lost to one of the two true powerhouses of this years season(Arizona). Their season was very much like ours was 2 years ago where we ran into UCONN in the Elite 8. It was just a bad draw.

I'll take a #2 seed in next year's tournament with a BTT championship in our back pockets. At that point, let the chips fall where they may.
I agree on the draw and have been telling others the same. They had a good season by our standards and expectations.

The point is that they were the preseason #1. They were repeatedly abused on their home court. While they can claim success, they had a bad season by their standards and expectations.

Preseason #1 is a trap that we should be happy to dodge.

Are we sure Morez and Mara will leave? They both have eligibility and as much as I hate to say it, it seems like UM has an open checkbook. The will have all of their guards back, too, in addition to their new top recruit. Unfortunately I don't see Mich going away. I wish they would.

If Dave Portnoy and Larry Ellison’s wife have their way, they will be bringing both of them back.

Remember Yaxel could have been a mid to late round 1st last year but Michigan convinced him to go there. Bringing back Mara/Morez I certainly could see happening as neither are lotto picks.

I don’t even think Michigan needs Blackwell tho. He’s certainly a good player, but on their team they already have Cadeau as primary PG and McKenney will want a bigger role too. Why bring in another guard?

Crystal Ball for Flory Bidunga to Texas Tech.

If they bring back Toppin, Anderson, and get Bidunga that’d be a heck of a team (and a whole lot of $$).
