Illiniinquirer guys seem to very clearly think it was a violation:

20:20 ---

…..

For me, this not being called was the worst call form that game though:

(Immediately led to 2pts for WISC)
Yep this is the instant it hits 20. So with last year’s rules, it was a violation. With next year’s rules, it wouldn’t be.

Also agree, that wasn’t the worst call that game.

The rulebook just says 10 seconds and doesn't specify how that should be determined using the shot clock. The case book refers to 20 on the shot clock, so either that's changing or they're going to add it to the rulebook.

I didn’t say there was going to be a guard on Mirk.

If he is bringing the ball up the court frequently, we aren’t in a good spot. I believe my words were opposing coaches would attack him with quicker guards, I’m thinking more like blitzing.
He was really only used to bring the ball up as a relief option though when a team was say picking up Wagler full court.

Not many bigs or even maybe any bigs in college are going to pick Mirk up full court. You probably don't want him frequently bringing the ball up the court against guards but he should be fine otherwise.

Honestly, I hope more teams do try to blitz and trap the Illini like Houston did last year. Still one of the dumbest coaching decisions I've seen in March recently and it completely played to the Illini's favor. Illinois is full of size and has multiple skilled bigs that fantastic passers(you aren't going to see a better passing group of bigs than the Twins plus Mirk).

Blitzing and trapping this roster just leads to fantastic ball movement for the Illini since they are all willing passers and have the size to see and pass over the defense.

I think with this Illini team, I'm really only worried about defenses from the teams with the size to match up on the glass and the ability to just play the Illini straight up without helping and force the Illini into a bunch of tough twos or off the dribble 3s(basically how UConn defended Illinois).

I mean that's how they play defense.

Each and every game for the last decade they've played that way (and have been pretty successful).

Yes. Houston is very successful because 99% of college basketball teams don’t have 5 guys on the floor with the capability to process and pass and burn the blitz. We do.

Similar to the Iowa State game in 2024. We knew they were going to trap Marcus down low, who was able to pass out of it. We swung it around and got open 3s all night.

Yes? If he shot 40% from 3pt, as you implied:

He’d be averaging 17.1pts instead of 15.8 (yes, that’s a huge difference). It would also mean 3.4 threes per game instead of 2.9 — would make him only the 4th power conference player to average 3.4 made threes per game on at least 40% percentage (Sandfort, Milan M, Atwell).

35% on 8.4 attempts means really good / great shooter, but there’s still a few efficiency things to improve on. 40% on 8.4 attempts means you’re in the top 1% of CBB shooters.

Stats inflation like increasing 3pt percentage by 5% changes the picture for any player, but especially for someone like Vaaks who takes so many attempts.

It’s like height at the NBA Draft. Ace Bailey was said to be 6”10 his entire season at Rutgers, but measured in at 6”7 at the combine.
My man.

I, like most people that took grade school math, understand that 5% can have a significant impact. You didn't need 3 paragraphs to explain that.

The point was that he was likely to "bounce back" from shooting 25%... which whether he averaged 10 or 15% better shooting didn't make it less of a facially ridiculous statement.

True but last years Houston defense was not nearly as good as it has been in a lot of other years.

Also, I get having a system and it working but sometimes you have to adjust to your opponent. They didn't and they got bounced in the sweet 16 because of it.

There's nothing wrong with the refs. We seem to go through this every season. Whining about them is the last refuge of a scoundrel. As Loren Tate said back in the '80s, "The game of basketball can't be officiated." As an IHSA ref back in the day, I believe this to be true. The hardest part is understanding there's no time to blink. Call it or not, you're going to impact the game either way.

...and shot 40% from 3 last year on 8 attempts a game.

Think he might improve on it ha
Pretty sure his 3pt% was like 35% last year. I can see him shot nearly 40% in an Illini uniform though.

Sorry, but would you describe many bigs as "quicker and handsy defenders."? If not guards, who are you envisioning there to be a regular risk?

He brought up the ball on average a handful of possessions a game last year to give the guards a break & provide a different look. Again, if "blitzed" he's a 6'9 man that will be able to see over most traps and can be trusted to pass out of it into a 4 v 3 situation. Seems...fine?
That’s fine if that’s what you prefer. I just personally disagree needing to have Mirk bring the ball up the court.

MSU was the game I noted where he repeatedly picked on your quick handsy Fears to the tune of 18 points 6 assists and 0 turnovers. Odd that you’d use a game where he didn’t even have a single turnover as an example of him not being reliable with the ball.

It doesn’t seem like you’re watching the same games the rest of us are watching. David needs to be a secondary/tertiary ball handler, but to be concerned about that is odd to me because he did that last year and was phenomenal.
1. You are correct on the MSU game. He was good that game.

2. We can disagree. It’s likely. However, there is no need for you to try to chastise me or put words in my mouth or attribute ideas, likes, or whatever else that aren’t mine. I have no idea where “your quick handsy Fears “ comment came from or is about.

3. In the future, I’d appreciate if you would try to respond personally if you choose to reply or disagree with me. I know this is a community, but trying to rally troops or pit my opinion/response against the board with, “It doesn’t seem like you’re watching the same game the rest of us are watching’”seems like a persuasive attempt or whatever. Again, I’m all good with you disagreeing and handling your business, but trying to rally a gang gives small man vibes or online chat board bully type vibes.
