Illini Basketball 2026-2027

Funny enough, that’s being changed this year:

  • Officials will call 10-second backcourt violations when the shot clock reaches 19 seconds, rather than 20. This change better aligns with shot clocks that measure tenths of a second and improves accuracy in administering the rule.

Another Illini rule change.
Illiniinquirer guys seem to very clearly think it was a violation:

20:20 ---

…..

For me, this not being called was the worst call form that game though:

We're discussing the only thing standing in the way of us and our rightful national championship this year.

Bad referees.
I don’t think the NCAAT refs were as bad as big ten.

In the Houston game I thought we got a few favorable ones (outside of only one play where it clearly should’ve been a foul on Tugler).

Iowa if felt like was bad both ways.

Yep this is the instant it hits 20. So with last year’s rules, it was a violation. With next year’s rules, it wouldn’t be.

Also agree, that wasn’t the worst call that game.

The rulebook just says 10 seconds and doesn't specify how that should be determined using the shot clock. The case book refers to 20 on the shot clock, so either that's changing or they're going to add it to the rulebook.

I didn’t say there was going to be a guard on Mirk.

If he is bringing the ball up the court frequently, we aren’t in a good spot. I believe my words were opposing coaches would attack him with quicker guards, I’m thinking more like blitzing.
He was really only used to bring the ball up as a relief option though when a team was say picking up Wagler full court.

Not many bigs or even maybe any bigs in college are going to pick Mirk up full court. You probably don't want him frequently bringing the ball up the court against guards but he should be fine otherwise.

Honestly, I hope more teams do try to blitz and trap the Illini like Houston did last year. Still one of the dumbest coaching decisions I've seen in March recently and it completely played to the Illini's favor. Illinois is full of size and has multiple skilled bigs that fantastic passers(you aren't going to see a better passing group of bigs than the Twins plus Mirk).

Blitzing and trapping this roster just leads to fantastic ball movement for the Illini since they are all willing passers and have the size to see and pass over the defense.

I think with this Illini team, I'm really only worried about defenses from the teams with the size to match up on the glass and the ability to just play the Illini straight up without helping and force the Illini into a bunch of tough twos or off the dribble 3s(basically how UConn defended Illinois).

I mean that's how they play defense.

Each and every game for the last decade they've played that way (and have been pretty successful).

Yes. Houston is very successful because 99% of college basketball teams don’t have 5 guys on the floor with the capability to process and pass and burn the blitz. We do.

Similar to the Iowa State game in 2024. We knew they were going to trap Marcus down low, who was able to pass out of it. We swung it around and got open 3s all night.
