UCLA-“We are in a massive financial hole.”

Also UCLA-“We’ll have to fire a guy that we still owe 6.5 million dollars.”

But in all seriousness, this is a big piece of evidence about how even with the money now rolling in, trying to make the dollars and cents work across an entire athletic program is only going to become tougher at the P4 level.

There's levels to all of this, but I have wondered about the ripple effects of the new financial dynamics of college sports. At the top levels, you may see cuts/eliminations of the non revenue sports. Still have to maintain title 9 compliance though. At the lower levels of D1, I think you could actually see schools willing to step down to D2 (or a D 1.5 if you will). Especially some of those smaller east coast schools that are D1 basketball on an enrollment of 3,000. No point in even trying to compete at the D1 level with the increased financial commitments involved. Will be interesting to see how it evolves (or devolves) over time.

while UCLA's AD is not in good financial shape, one has to take their $10M annual Calimony payment to Cal. I think this is the last year they're on the hook for that. not suggesting that's the sole cause of their dilemma, but it sure don't help

Honestly, I didn’t even think about the Calimony. I was thinking more about the major travel expenses for the non-rev sports.
