I wouldn't make that assumption --that seems like it would cause a serious PR issue. But scheduling future games that benefit both sides is probably on the table and and there's benefit to keeping the relationship. This happens in business all the time (potential future deals as leverage over current issues). No inside info on my part so consider it speculation. I don't know why WMU handled it the way they did.
I have always thought that. Every second should be as important as the last. Obviously I don’t want review of every play to put a second back on.
When you are a so called blue blood you get all the calls even the made up ones! Scum should be automatically eliminated from any playoff consideration immediately. Oklahoma will bury them!

It depends on who "Western Michigan" is. WMU as an institution clears a million or so dollars each time it schedules one of these engagements, which seems a no-brainer to accept for a program of lesser means than, say, the Leaders and BestTM. In addition, I'd guess that most MAC players would like the chance to play at least once in a venue such as Michigan Stadium. If "WMU" is the fan base well, then, it probably sucks without compensation.
IMO, what occurred at the end of the game Saturday night was a black swan event, and further egg smeared on Michigan's already-encrusted face, which we all enjoy. However, it also seems to me in this case that from WMU's POV, there's no such thing as bad publicity. It can only benefit WMU and its football program. Its president has already raised his profile as a sober, mature statesman. And the program now has some cred as a David v. kind-of-eldery-limping-Goliath (because that's what UM's football program resembles right now.)
All costs are sunk for WMU at this point. There's only upside for them. Unlike Michigan, which the public will continue to ridicule, much to my delight. Win-win.
Then again I'm a glass-half-full guy.

While I'm of course sympathetic to WMU's plight here, the real sense of outrage I felt in the moment was the way in which the incident was a miraculous rescue from what would have been a credibility-shattering debut for Kyle Whittingham, who I have been shouting from the rooftops was a terrible, desperate hire whose misalignment with the Michigan job in 2026 is extremely vulnerable to being shattered in exactly that way.
The idea that this "classy Michigan with the classy Utah coach oh look how classy we all are" canard could limp along and fake it until it made it was very upsetting.

I'm with you, and I'm confident that whatever respite Whittingham received from the heavens Saturday night will be brief.
I tuck into MGoBlog occasionally because it contains some solid writing and football/hoops analysis, and because it's delicious to watch its proprietor, Brian Cook, contort himself occasionally to rationalize certain of the university's ongoing embarrassments though, it must be said, not all. (He is forever appropriately disgusted with Bo Schembechler turning a blind eye for years to sexual abuse within the athletic department. In addition, a recent piece he wrote noted this: "You are what your litany of embarrassingly fired employees say you are.")
When I read his season preview last week I chuckled at this straw at which he grapsed:
Kyle Whittingham isn't Urban Meyer, though he worked with him and the men are friends. He is, however, a real football coach who's coached Michigan-!!! teams for 21 years already. The only women he follows on Instagram are family members. He used a 320-pound fullback a year ago.
When you're not between you feel like yourself. Just that; only that. Comfortable in your skin. Here's to Kyle Whittingham battering down some doors with sets Jim Harbaugh gets misty about. Here's to an athletic department that is not going to fire people for doing embarrassing things every other Thursday. Here's to whatever brief respite from the maelstrom around college sports the actual sport can provide.
That maelstrom around Michigan has yet to abate as of this afternoon. Let's hope it intensifies on national TV this Saturday afternoon v. Oklahoma, and that the 5.5-point spread is ludicrously low.

This thread is long, so you probably missed the screenshots in my previous post #288. You can see from the position of WMU's #12 (I said #2 but was describing #12) that the embedded clock was out of sync. We can slice it other ways with other points of reference, too. There was time left.
I've decided not to make some grand video overlay because 1) it would take me too long, 2) someone else probably already has, and 3) that's too much defense of Michigan... but ask questions and try to poke holes in my conclusions. Screenshots are easy to share. I want us Illini diehards to be the most informed fans out there.

As much as I hate Michigan, I just don't see this happening. It's not like they hired Lovie Smith; Whittingham is a damn good coach with a Big 10 persona and the $ to back it up. He is cursed right now with a bad QB, but once he gets a decent QB they will be playoff bound.

Whittingham was an excellent coach at Utah for decades, he richly deserved his Gary Patterson-like status as one of the most underrated coaches in the sport.
But the idea that this 66-year-old Mormon who had been at Utah since Gary Moeller was Michigan coach, running an under-the-radar program of 25 year old linemen and Cali kids with a chip on their shoulder (and retired from that job having been politely elbowed aside in favor of his HC-in-waiting) isn't a massive fish out of water helming Larry Ellison and Dave Portnoy's NIL machine at Michigan has been a total psyop from day 1.
If he navigates the Underwood mess successfully I will be flabbergasted.

Everyone knows friendly officiating for the home team (or just plain bad calls) happen and can swing the game. Doesn't mean the WMU athletic dept doesn't want to get another game bought out. They've been doing road games with BIG opponents for years.
