Grew up in Champaign. Don’t even try to have this convo with Cards fans. I never full understood it. But it feels like it’s passed down thru generations.

Fun story for the crazies on this board. Nemanja Jokic - the middle brother, Nikola is the baby bro - is a friend of mine (we workout at the same gym here in south Denver) and I was congratulating and joking with him about getting his agent license this summer, which he did, and how he needs to start funneling even more elite Euros towards Illinois. He laughed of course as we have discussed the whole Misko/Illinois connection in times past, and as you might imagine he knows Misko quite well. But as we talked about his new path he mentioned he will focus more on the college guys. He got his license as an agent for the NBA but I believe there’s another one for the NCAA that he’ll have to get next, but think that NBA license needed to be attained first if I’m not mistaken.
Nemanja hears all about the Illini-Balkan stories from me, which he honestly already knows a fair amount about, but I show him the Mirk videos that are posted on this board which always produces copious amounts of hilarity for us both. Anyways, great dude. One I will be continually talking about Illinois with as well.

Yeah, definitely animpulse control problem appears to be the biggest commonality between the two…IMO.
Seems like Knight had a more of persecution complex than Hurley…very seething and volatile. Seemed to have more of a problem with humanity itself.
Whereas Hurley is more of a breathtakingly arrogant, self-aggrandizing…near megalomaniacal pr*ck.

Knight was a psychopath. He couldn't have coached today with cell phones. He would have been in prison. Not exaggerating.
Agree... I don't know why I did, but I read his book and it gave me a bit of a bias towards him.... I don't like him, but can absolutely respect his ability to win and to build probably the best team culture in CBB. He can for sure be an a**hole but it also seems like the media really juices it when he does have a blowout.Media tends to sensationalize the trope.
I think the whining that we get from a lot of the prominent coaches in CBB (about players, the environment, etc.) is harder to stomach for me than Hurley's antics.
I guess if Hurley wants to go to the NBA than it could make sense if Murray is succeeding.
You're not going to move off of Hurley for him though.
Schertz is still out there too so it's not like there is a shortage of good coaches potentially available for big spots.
If you're from Southern Illinois than you're far far closer to the Cardinals than you are either Chicago team.
Makes sense you that would grow up a fan of the team that's locally on tv and is easier to go to games. Same thing with the Rams when they existed in St Louis.
Feel like Champaign is the dividing line of the state. South of there tends to be more in line with St Louis and North is Chicago.
Same thing with Northwest Indiana. Full of Chicago sports fans since Chicago is far closer than Indianapolis.
Why on earth would state matter more than proximity? There are parts of Illinois that are a 30 minute drive from St. Louis and a 5 hour drive from Chicago? It's unreasonable that people should root for the team whose games they can actially attend, just because another team much further away happens to be within the same arbitrary lines drawn up on a map 200 years ago?

Are national pride and state pride really the same thing? And if you live in one of the 33 states that does not have an MLB team, does that mean you don't get to cheer for one? You have just go all-in for the best minor league or independent league team in your state?
A huge chunk of them are already Bears fans. Northwest Indiana is largely Bears, not Colts, territory (though I also know a lot of them did the whole fair-weather-fan thing in the Peyton Manning era - as did a lot of my Cubs fan classmates with the White Sox in 2005 when I was a student in Champaign).
On that note, how far down does this whole lines-on-a-map-level loyalty requirement go go? If I live in the same Ward as the Cubs, and I cheer for the White Sox, does that make me a Benedict Arnold? And is it where you live or where you were born? If I was born in Green Bay and my parents moved me to Chicago when I was a baby, must I cheer for the Packers or the Bears? What if I was born and raised in Green Bay until the age of 10, then moved to Cairo, Illinois, probably as far from the Bears as one can be in Illinois. What then?

Didn’t expect the MLB Illinois fan camp discussion to go this far. For what it’s worth, growing up in Central Illinois, I noticed a pretty even 50/50 split between Cardinals and Cubs fans. Only knew one White Sox fan until I went to UofI and made friends with those from the suburbs.
I think the rivalry of Cards vs Cubs drove the fanbases to those two in the Central area, plus the local farm league affiliate would flip flop between being either a Cardinal or Cub-based team. So pros like Pujols and Baez made their starts helped. Also, Central and Southern areas I’ve noticed have a bit of disdain for Chicagoland that’s more political, so allegiance may help gravitate some to STL, maybe? Either way, Cardinals have a clear fan base in the state that though Chicago and Suburbs outnumber the population for the rest of the state, you take a trip down around Campus, Bloomington, Peoria, and south from there I would say you’d never think Cubs fans outnumber Cardinals fans.
I might add success helps a bit to build a fan base. Central Illinois had noticeable amounts of GB Packers fans (Bears rivalry maybe helped), Iowa fans (lot of rural and farm kids gravitated that way), and Colts fans.
Essentially, there’s a hodgepodge that isn’t necessarily statehood driven. Region drives it some too, among many factors. But again, Cardinals have a large presence in the Central Region, and it’s not necessarily a mystery.

People are free to choose to be fans of whoever they want. In the era of satellites that reach Antarctica...... people in Miami are fans of teams in Seattle. It's really ok.
