Grew up in Champaign. Don’t even try to have this convo with Cards fans. I never full understood it. But it feels like it’s passed down thru generations.i've tried to make this argument with our downstate brothers, but with no luck.

Yeah, definitely animpulse control problem appears to be the biggest commonality between the two…IMO.Hurley is very similar to Bobby Knight in that unlike many blustering college coaches, it's not a WWF act, he's in fact just as crazy as he looks.
It all ends in some sort of ugly incident I suspect, that's not a guy who is in control of himself.
Media tends to sensationalize the trope.Patrick Yeah, definitely animpulse control problem appears to be the biggest commonality between the two…IMO.
Seems like Knight had a more of persecution complex than Hurley…very seething and volatile. Seemed to have more of a problem with humanity itself.
Whereas Hurley is more of a breathtakingly arrogant, self-aggrandizing…near megalomaniacal pr*ck.
Both kinda batsh*t.

Knight was a psychopath. He couldn't have coached today with cell phones. He would have been in prison. Not exaggerating.Hurley is very similar to Bobby Knight in that unlike many blustering college coaches, it's not a WWF act, he's in fact just as crazy as he looks.

He was helluva golfer too. Lol.Knight was a psychopath. He couldn't have coached today with cell phones. He would have been in prison. Not exaggerating.
Agree... I don't know why I did, but I read his book and it gave me a bit of a bias towards him.... I don't like him, but can absolutely respect his ability to win and to build probably the best team culture in CBB. He can for sure be an a**hole but it also seems like the media really juices it when he does have a blowout.Media tends to sensationalize the trope.

I guess if Hurley wants to go to the NBA than it could make sense if Murray is succeeding.Could be a directly inverse relationship to how well BC does.
I've seen Hurley talk XO's with Reddick, guy sounded like he was speaking another language. He's not short on hoops acumen.
This is when dynasty type teams start falling apart, when coaches start losing their staff.
My question would be, if Murray crushes it at BC, does UConn find a way to expedite handing the baton to him so they don't lose him to some other program? If he does wonders there in 3-4 years, he'll have any job he wants after that and there are some big programs who could be on the market (UK, UM, KU).
If you're from Southern Illinois than you're far far closer to the Cardinals than you are either Chicago team.Grew up in Champaign. Don’t even try to have this convo with Cards fans. I never full understood it. But it feels like it’s passed down thru generations.
Why on earth would state matter more than proximity? There are parts of Illinois that are a 30 minute drive from St. Louis and a 5 hour drive from Chicago? It's unreasonable that people should root for the team whose games they can actially attend, just because another team much further away happens to be within the same arbitrary lines drawn up on a map 200 years ago?i've tried to make this argument with our downstate brothers, but with no luck.
Yeah this sounds just like something Benedict Arnold would sayWhy on earth would state matter more than proximity? Well, if lived in Detroit or Buffalo, would you chear for team Canada in the Olympics? Would you chear for the Buffalo Bills or the Toronto Argonauts? Why on earth would state matter more than proximity? Agree man. Lol I don't know. Seems like Northwestern is Chicago's team based on the logic. We may have to reexamine this to make sure everyone is on board and loyalty remains.Yeah this sounds just like something Benedict Arnold would say![]()

We will see. I don’t agree with the way he handles himself on the sideline, but there has to be a reason he hasn’t.I disagree he's fortunate he hasn't gotten kicked out of more games than he has. Karma is eventually going to catch up with him unless he mellows out some.
Yeah, that would be it. If he wins another title, I can see him considering it and an NBA team going out of their way to bring him on. Murray is a CT guy, grew up there and went to college there.I guess if Hurley wants to go to the NBA than it could make sense if Murray is succeeding.
You're not going to move off of Hurley for him though.
Schertz is still out there too so it's not like there is a shortage of good coaches potentially available for big spots.
Counterpoint: He didn’t get kicked out of that game. In fact he’s been ejected from 1 total game he’s coached. Zero suspensions.Counterpoint:

In you live in El Paso, is Team Mexico or Team USA in soccer?
I don't know man....unless you were born in those countries, the Benedict Arnold conversation is real.![]()

You know, Hammond, Indiana fans will have the same choice. Are you a Bears fan or a Colts fan? That's obviously the better comp.

Well, it's right in line with the dumbest/sarcastic/purposely humorous discussion on the boardThis might be the dumbest argument I've ever heard.
I'm getting off this thread because the amount of people that are taking this whole Benedict Arnold thing as more than satire is crazy! Are national pride and state pride really the same thing? And if you live in one of the 33 states that does not have an MLB team, does that mean you don't get to cheer for one? You have just go all-in for the best minor league or independent league team in your state?
A huge chunk of them are already Bears fans. Northwest Indiana is largely Bears, not Colts, territory (though I also know a lot of them did the whole fair-weather-fan thing in the Peyton Manning era - as did a lot of my Cubs fan classmates with the White Sox in 2005 when I was a student in Champaign).
On that note, how far down does this whole lines-on-a-map-level loyalty requirement go go? If I live in the same Ward as the Cubs, and I cheer for the White Sox, does that make me a Benedict Arnold? And is it where you live or where you were born? If I was born in Green Bay and my parents moved me to Chicago when I was a baby, must I cheer for the Packers or the Bears? What if I was born and raised in Green Bay until the age of 10, then moved to Cairo, Illinois, probably as far from the Bears as one can be in Illinois. What then?
