Purdue 24, Illinois 17 Postgame

This whole situation we are in is self inflicted and it lands squarely at the feet of Bret and Josh. Josh might need to tighten the screws here. Yea, AHen was out of his league. In retrospect, for all parties Walters and Purdue and Bret and Illinois, we probably should've tabbed Kane and not AHen. Ahen is an elite DB coach and probably would've been better for him to do that more. Would've Kane worked out here, idk, hasn't been great at Purdue, but different situation at the time. All I know, there was zero reason to overhaul the defense, we didn't have the money to do so, and guess what, we watched dudes walk out the door and now we have a staff from Montana that is going to collect the most money they've ever made.

Where is the money coming from to buy a whole new defense next year? We lose a lot on offense, the O-line won't be cheap, and I'm sure certain offensive staff members aren't getting cheaper. If we win 3 or 4 this year and follow that up with hopefully 5-6 next year depending on how the schedule breaks, you don't have to squint to see the end of big Bret here.

In my opinion, it didn't have to be this way.

One more thing, what in world are we doing with Feagin? I always felt that big boy could've been more physical as a runner, but what value has he been at TE. A concussed TE now. His value was at RB and still is.
I don’t disagree with anything you said. But, didn’t Feagin “want” to switch to TE and the staff went with it? (It’s neither here nor there I guess…it hasn’t panned out.)

That is the way I believe it went down and I understand Bret doesn't stand in the way of that. I think stuff like that needs to change. You don't want to be a RB, go chase your senior year TE dreams elsewhere. I don't know what he cost, but that would've been freed up money.

I will admit and probably posted it, but I could see his TE vision. Crazy me, we haven't used a TE in the passing game really ever under Lunney and guy didn't seem to like contact as a RB.

This lost stings

Our Defense and our lines are horrible. Honestly don’t spend money on a big name qb. Invest in the lines. U can’t do anything unless u can block or apply pressure

Somebody explain again how the millions of dollars spent on the giant video board could not be spent on fielding a competitive football team.

So aliens can laugh at us while watching from space?
Because Larry Geis donated the money specifically designated for stadium renovations, with roughly 30% going to the jumbotron scoreboard. Diverting the funds to NIL for for football players would have been all kinds of unethical. Possibly criminal?

I want to see what happens next week at Michigan State. Right now I am trying to believe that today’s performance was related to the coaching churn this week.
that was my thought, except why would it seemingly have more impact on the offense? The defense was bad, but not horrible. Good enough to win this game. The offense, especially the QB, looked off.

Overall, there wasn't the enthusiasm one might expect for homecoming.

Some things I want to go back and rewatch but I probably won’t.

When Dixon got blasted late and they called PI on PU, could that have been targeting? Looked like a horrible helmet to helmet hit on a defenseless WR.
From what I saw, didn’t use the crown and didn’t launch into the head. It looked facemask to facemask. Didntbrhink it was targeting. But it thought it was a personal foul for a hit on defenseless receiver. And should’ve been another 15 yard penalty.

This is one of those losses that make you say at least I'm alive, and you've got to be grateful for that. Just a total reality check, you still get to hug your loved ones. I really don't know what to say.
That was my thought on the drive home. This experience doesn’t enhance my life. Life is short and the calendar spins faster at 71. I’m blessed with other interests and will shift my attention toward them, away from the mess we saw today. Football season competes with wonderful fall cycling weather and time with family.

All I ever expected was “reasonably competitive” play, win or lose. Today we saw awful play calling and sloppy execution all around —- offense, defense, and special teams. It was the kind of cringe-worthy clown show I just don’t care to watch, televised or live. Next year’s season tickets will depend on the last three home games. I won’t waste my time watching the away games after what we saw today.

Just to be honest, I have no intention of watching anymore games this year. Ill do what I do when we stink, check the score and hope we win and I can at least check out some fun highlights. This team is just no fun to watch. Given the choice I would rather have a top football team than basketball. I love football. However so many times the last 5 decades we are just awful. Awful. Awful. After 50 years you would think we would accidentally get it right from to time. Instead we are going to take 2 solid seasons to build on and hope to make a jump into a wisconsin or iowa type tier program and instead jump into a 3 to 4 win season and start all over.

They just arent any fun to watch.
Me too. When it is no longer enjoyable and instead frustrating, I find something else to do. The wait for Basketball is not long! I set the bar low this season, but not low enough.

Today was reminiscent of the Beckman days. Did Brett say anything about lasagna or if only we hadn't made a certain mistake on a certain down that we would have won?

BB’s postgame was worrisome. He basically said a break here, a good deflection there, and we’d be ok.
I’d much prefer we fully own this horrendous play and state a much much higher standard for this program than hoping a lucky deflection goes our way in order to pull out a miracle win at home vs a bad team on a 16 game losing streak. Isn’t that where we were before we hired you Brett?
I don’t know what can be done to show improvement this season, but I know it starts with the sober acknowledgement
of what we are right now: broken. So start developing & showing us what the young players can do Brett- at this point we all need to see hope for the future. I’d personally rather win only 3 this year and feel good about our key players developing for next year than win 4 or 5 with guys that are gone after this year anyway.
You are at a critical crossroads right now Brett. If you want a future at IL beyond next year, you’d be wise to recognize that, and act accordingly vs falsely believing we just need a few breaks.

I thought we might be ok but when we had them stalling on a 3rd and 9 and rushed three giving up 14 yards. I realized we were going to be in for a long year.

The worst single game performance of the Bielema era.

Two types of bad losses:

• the ones with the most heartbreak
• the worst single game performance where the team just looks awful

2022 Michigan will always be the first one.

Today was the second one.
2024 Minnesota at home with a chance to qualify for the CFB wayyyyyy higher than 2022 Michigan IMO.

Still blew it to Purdue (Ironic) the game before Michigan but I digress.

Today without question the most embarassing, inexcusible loss of the Bert era.

Some positives for today:

- Michigan lost
- Iowa lost
- We always had 11 players on the field for defense (although I questioned it based on the play at times)
- The crowd was into it for the first half and the students showed up. (Although some still need to learn to not yell when we go for it on 4th down)

It's been a fun ride the last two years. Too bad Indiana's run overshadowed our teams.

Instead of just complaining about how bad the players, coaches, AD, and just about everyone else is, maybe you should put some skin in the game and make even a small donation to ICON. Iconforillini.com

Today’s effort was pathetic. Something is off with this team and I am starting to wonder if it’s BB and the staff. People on the board have already mentioned the problems. This team is slow and appears directionless on both sides of the ball. The crowd tried to stand behind the team but let’s be honest, there was very little to cheer about today.

Two comments. First of all, Go White Sox!! Secondly, if Hauck did, in fact, walk away on his own, it was an incredibly cowardly and selfish move. You take the job, you should put everything you got into it for a year. Instead, he hung Illinois and the assistants who came with him out to dry. Have no respect for that guy.

Hopefully Larry agrees with, in for a penny in for a pound. Hes sitting there thinking I didnt spend all that money so fans could more comfortably watching the worst team in the big ten.
