I was born in 1971 and remember the following coachess

Mike White = did great things but was fast n loose with the rules and it wasn’t sustainable

Mackovic = good coach. Had something cooking. I bet he sometimes wakes in a cold sweat regretting the day he left for Austin.

Tepper =. Perhaps the worst coach in modern power conference history

Turner = solid coach but didn’t work the recruiting side

Zook = exact opposite of Turner. Game coaching disaster class

Beckman = see Tepper and LASAGNA

Lovie = similar to Turner

Bret = without question the best Illini coach of my lifetime. We aren’t fancy or flashy but we are smart, well prepared and give max effort at all times. We do the little things well. And the players are fully bought in on Bret. I’ve never seen one of his teams lay down on him. We’ve had bad games but we keep going for 60 every week.

Ruehle will be fired tomorrow. I was in the pool thinking of sinking and staying there after Purdue and our tackling. Lack of defense was mind boggling. How bad must Hauck have been. Same players, yet they wrap up now. Man I hope for best on injuries, we'll be pulling students out of stands to play if this keeps up. I honestly thought 3-9 or 4-8. Just wow. Coach B and my Coach Cooper amazing 👏.
You perfectly summarize what I am feeling! Congratulations coaches and players!

We may not have a lot of guys on D that will play on Sunday, but they are clearly much better than they looked with Hauck in charge. Clearly not the bunch of MAC level guys that they were called not that long ago. Credit to them and to Cooper and the D staff for a great turnaround.

Every winning program needs a collection of elite athletes. Guys that just have that extra gear that others don't. But every winning program also needs a locker room of guys that may not be elite athletes but will fight you to the end of time and back if they have to. We have those guys.

Not all that many years go... The Illini footballers would never be on National television on a Friday night.

The Illini uniforms would not have looked as cool as last night.

The team would not be playing with confidence and a bit of swagger.

There would not be as many Illini fans filling up the place.

The Illini would not be a place that would interest top recruits.

Not all that many years ago... Nebraska was untouchable. Only Oklahoma gave them pause – and often a loss as well. The Big Red were a Big Deal and everybody knew it.

Nebraska uniforms now largely mirror what they looked like back then and those uniforms are the only thing that resemble the proud and successful Husker program of the past.

Nebraska does NOT play with confidence or swagger. Like they once did.

Nebraska has a LONG home sellout streak but that is now in serious jeopardy.

Nebraska will only get top recruits now if they overpay for them for going to Lincoln instead of some other place they’d rather be.

The Nebraska program has gone through a series of restarts for 25 years and nothing has worked.

While the Illini have elevated themselves into the upper half of Big Ten football (at least) and have moved above the current state of the Husker program.

Nebraska is looking at yet another purge and restart.

The Illini have a solid foundation and are always now building on that.

Nebraska fans are weeping or turning away. Illini Nation is smiling and excited.

The College Football Sands have shifted. The Sea of Red is now a Sea of Tears.

And in Orange & Blue Nation it’s SURF’S UP!... ‘Catch a Wave, and You’re Sitting On Top of the World”.

I was reading one of their forums and they feel that if they lose to Rutgers, they will have no choice but to make changes. They really questioned the 2 point try. The fan base have the pitch forks out. They believe they will not get to a bowl even when they are at 5 wins now.
Will going from 5-0 to 5-7 for them finally shut up all the Zook 2012 6-0 to 6-6 references? Inquiring minds want to know.

But honestly I'd rather they win 1-2 more and keep Rhule around for us

What an incredible game and turnaround from the start of the season. I cannot believe what a great job the staff and players have done to turn things around. I thought we’d struggle to get to 3-4 wins and we just had a stretch where we beat Nebraska and Oregon????

And what showing for Gies Memorial Stadium on a Friday night on Fox, the lights and show looked amazing on tv and what a great experience for the fans. They’ve done an incredible job improving the gameday experience.

If we can get Bret to Nebraska NIL levels, nothing is out of reach for Illinois Football.

At 1:08 is the same fake FG play Bret referenced from the '09 Wisky-OSU game, though there it looks to be about a 4th and 7 from the 9 rather than a 4th and 12 from the 33. Maybe every football coach is like this, but I'm always amazed at Bret's recall for stuff like this to say, "Nebraska's field goal block looks like this, so let's run that play from 17 years ago."
