Captain America on the sideline soon enough!! Partner up with Marvel, bring in more money. NExt thing you know, we are all over ESPN and other places for having CA as our mascot.

Never Say Never Again. It was essentially a remake of Thunderball, IIRC.
Correct. Made by an independent production company instead of eon. Sean connery was in it and was very old. I didn't like it.

Oh yea, and I still like the shield

I really dig #teamshield. I think it's catchy.

Speaking of the shield and mascots, Grange/Galloping Ghosts doesn't work for basketball. In order to come up with an appropriate mascot shouldn't it work for all teams? The Captain America thing is interesting, but I wonder in superhero status if there is one that has wings, too. That way it could work in reference to "Flying Illini", as well. Just brainstorming here.

I'm sorry, I just can't see a cartoon character as the mascot of a University, any University. Of course, I can't take oversize rodents or large tree nuts either. I'd rather go without.

I don't know if I speak for all of team shield when I say this, but other than as a bit of joking around, I think any association of the shield or Illinois athletics generally with superheroes in a direct fashion is hacky and stupid. I was cringing when the Nike guy kept referring to our athletes as "superheroes".

I just blew that off as some marketing hype, but the shield could also be used as a real shield for a mascot, too. There are plenty of possibilities. Just taking a look at the sour milk from a few who didn't like the shield. It's natural that anything else will make some, whether a few or many, cringe.

That is my one problem with the rebrand which is the zig-zags on the basketball jersey. It doesn't really fit, and it seems weird that the University tried to keep the Chief imagery away from the new uniforms and then just had this huge nod to the Chief.

I just don't think that the zig-zags are a nod to the chief, but rather just a bad addition to an otherwise solid design.

Perhaps, but if so then the zig zags are about the silliest things I have ever seen on an Illini uniform.

You're wrong, period.

Unless what you're saying is that even though they are intended as a dog whistle for pro-Chief Illini fans, the effect is insufficient to really make anybody happy, in which case I agree with you.

Those zig-zags don't remind me in any way of the Chief. If that was the intent, it failed. If we wanted to be reminded of the Chief we should have added some buckskin fringe to all Illini uniforms. (I know that's stupid but that would remind fans of the Chief and it would be unique.)

I don't know if they were intended as a nod to the Chief, but I wouldn't see them as such unless someone told me. Like the columns on the shield, I didn't see that either until someone pointed it out. Even then, I just nodded and moved along. :)

Although this zig zag looks different than some of the other zig zags we had on the basketball jerseys in the past, I'm inclined to think that Nike probably did put that in as a nod to the Chief. Still, the look is awkward.

We are in agreement, Kams. The zig-zags don't appear to be a nod to the chief to me. As you said, it was an insufficient gesture for pro-chief fans.

Agreed.

Hahaha, where do you find these things??

YIKES! That can't be real.

they were... the Denver NASL team wore them back in the 80s.

The Colorado Rapids did an April fools day prank this year where they announced they were going to wear them as throwbacks.... leading to that picture.
