I do think the using the shield would make for an interesting jersey.

ijustkrushalot, personally I don't think any of those 3 unis you've shown are anything special, just meh. So why bother?

I was just stating that it's possible for lighter grey uniforms to be worn as the colored uniform.

to be honest I'm not entirely sold on the grey football uniforms, I'd need to see what else they have to go with them.

I love the grey basketball uniforms (provided they are worn 3 times or less per year), but I'm not sure about the football ones. I do like the Tennessee ones above.

IMO if you were going to say "Galloping Ghost Grey Illinois Alternates" I'd think a darker grey with matching dark helmets.. something more sinister looking... but that's just me.

I am 100% sure they will be wearing these jerseys. It'll be interesting to see what the helmets and pants will be though. Also the opponent for that game's uniforms will contrast just fine (but it won't be Nebraska ;) )

I could see a navy helmet with an oversized shield, similar to the Boise State helmet in that picture, being a possibility. Whatever it ends up being, I hope there's at least SOME orange involved.

I think any orange in this uniform is unlikely.

Maybe if all the white in the uniform was replaced by orange? I think that would look pretty cool. Otherwise I think it's a little dull. Maybe if paired with a flashy helmet it could work.

Man, and on a sunny day like that too? Awful tough to tell the two teams apart.

I've never seen someone wearing an alternate grey uniform in public where I saw it and thought, "Wow, that looks pretty cool!" I understand having an alternate. But it should still incorporate the school colors or at least have some semi-obvious way to show what school it belongs to. Alternates in my opinion should be an alternate design such as using the Shield or other alternate logo and/or using the school colors in a interesting way. Just having a grey jersey with Illinois on the back or a teeny tiny shield on it with little or no blue and orange just seems silly to me.

Side note. What does the color grey have to do with Red Grange?

I thought they might use his nickname as reasoning for the grey uniforms. The Nike guy mentioned Red Grange and Galloping Ghost a few times during his rebrand presentation.

A streak of fire, a breath of flame
Eluding all who reach and clutch;
A gray ghost thrown into the game
That rival hands may never touch;
A rubber bounding, blasting soul
Whose destination is the goal.

Red Grange of Illinois

Did you just come up with this? :clappy:

If this Galloping Ghost thing is real, they should really be selling those jerseys in #77, right?

He never actually wore a number at Illinois did he? All the pictures I've seen of him playing at Illinois were in the striped jerseys.

I actually think the white-grey-white would be a cool combo to pull out every once in awhile. Oregon has made it work (although the grey is more of a trim):

Edit: just to add on...bottom line is that it looks we're going to have a lot of uniform combinations. That's appealing to teenagers.

For some other team, maybe.

If we wore that gray crap every game, it would erode our identity. What's the point of wearing them for even just one game?

Boring. If someone was wearing that out no one would know what the team is.

Correct. The most prominent thing on that jersey is the Swoosh. LAME.

The number was on the back of the uniform Grange wore, not on both the front and the back like they are today. All the pictures you see of Grange are from the front, so you don't see the number.

you need to check out Oklahoma States uni combos. no one does black, white, orange and gray better than them

galloping ghost = grey in color, I suppose ?

Grange was famously #77 and his number was retired right after he played his last game in 1925 (a win against tOSU in Columbus). Grange said he ended up with 77 because the guy in front of him got 76 and the guy behind 78.
