11/7 Weekday Games

#54
A couple weeks ago Louisville also lost an exhibition game to Lenoir-Rhyne, a D2 college. Fans must be panicking over there.
I don't follow D2 like I used to, but my recollection is that Lenoir-Rhyne was in a weak league and rarely had a competitive team. If things are the same today, Louisville fans should definitely be panicking.
Bellarmine always fielded a competitive team in a tough conference in D2. The better D2 teams have always been on par with the lower echelon D1 leagues. D2 teams going D1 has usually been relatively easy - Cal State Bakersfield, Grand Canyon, Seattle, Cal Baptist, Northern Kentucky (IIRC) and others have made the transition without much difficulty. That said, Bellarmine is 218 in KenPom after beating Louisville - you can't really sugarcoat a loss to them either.

No, but they are still a sub 200 loss per both KenPom and Torvik. But I don't believe Louisville was expected to be very good this year.
I think I read that they were 91 on KenPom before the game (103 now), which was better than Nebraska and Minnesota but not by a lot. So you are right, not too good.

Didn't want to start a 11/9 games thread so put this here - Bellarmine (another D2 recently turned D1 team like USI) took down Louisville 67-66 at Louisville this evening - ouch.
Some fun upsets and close calls so far:

Stetson 83, Florida State 74
#14 TCU 73, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 72
Sam Houston 52, Oklahoma 51
Minnesota 61, Western Michigan
Florida Gulf Coasta 74, USC 61 ... that's gotta be embarrassing for Andy!
Providence 66, Rider 65
South Carolina 80, South Carolina State 77
Georgetown 99, Coppin State 89 (OT)
Bellarmine 67, Louisville 66

By the way, holy hell is Michigan State's non-conference schedule brutal!

vs. #2 Gonzaga (San Diego, CA)
vs. #4 Kentucky (Indianapolis, IN)
vs. #16 Villanova
vs. Alabama (Portland, OR)
vs. #21 Oregon or UConn (Portland, OR)
vs. (likely) #1 North Carolina or #16 Villanova again (Portland, OR)
at Notre Dame

Damn. With that said, this is one of my favorite Illini non-conference schedules we have had in several years, minus no United Center game (would have been the perfect year to bring it back...).

#8 vs. UCLA (Las Vegas, NV)
vs. #5 Baylor or #18 Virginia (Las Vegas, NV)
vs. Syracuse
vs. #12 Texas (New York, NY)
vs. Missouri (St. Louis, MO)

You would have added another ranked team to the schedule - ours would have looked more like that of MSU at that point. Not sure you want to bring that game back with all the new personnel this year. Maybe next year.

Fair enough ... I guess I ideally thought of a "name" opponent that wasn't that good ... maybe like Louisville, for example.

I'm sure it was a logistical issue or possibly still lingering COVID restriction concerns, but really it was LAST YEAR that would have been great to bring it back.

Since there isn't a new thread to put this in...

ISU 54, EIU 49

Panthers dug themselves a hole in the 1st half with cold shooting. ISU blew a 12 point halftime lead with the Panthers tying it midway through the 2nd half before ISU started to pull away late.

Tonight was first time ISU and EIU have met on the basketball court since 1998. First time they have played in Charleston since 1981. Redbirds have now won 7 straight against EIU with the Panthers last win coming in 1971.

Podziemski putting on another show against GA Southern. Scored 30 of Santa Clara's 55 points with just over 9:30 to go in the game.

EDIT: Didn't realize there was a former Illini in college hoops thread. Whoops.

What the hell are those turquoise unis? That's not even one of their colors. Were they for Indigenous American Heritage Month?

I was just about to say...OK State deserves to lose with those uniforms.

But on another note, SIU is rated 85 on torvik. Didn't realize they were that good. Looking at their roster, they have a ton of seniors. I'll have to follow along with their season. It's fun when the state of Illinois is good at basketball (except NW, they can suck every year).

How does Patrick Ewing still have a job?

Was impressed by IU last night. Reneau is similar to our frosh in that he is physically ready to play. Looked to be the best of the BIG teams I watched in a small sample.

Tacomallini

Washington State
Fun fact. Bellarmine is in Louisville and their head coach is a form Crum and Patino assistant. They also have one of the most efficient offenses in D2 and in D1 since their transition.
We'll see how Omar Payne and Jacksonville U fares against the dribble-less offense this year. Thanks for sharing this video
EDIT: also, they'll play Grandison and Duke, Kentucky, Clemson, UCLA, Murray State. Not a schedule to scoff at: https://athletics.bellarmine.edu/sports/mens-basketball/schedule?path=mbball
