Can anyone explain what might possibly be the greatest mystery in college sports: how can Penn State pack 100k into a football stadium, but only get about 4-5k at their basketball games? I get they aren’t great, but even watching right now as they lead late against a ranked team, so many of their fans are sitting down. Blows my mind every time.
The Bryce Jordan Center is an uninspiring place to see a game and, frankly, the fan base is small and themselves uninspired.

[EDIT: I believe at the nadir of Harv Schmidt's tenure as coach in the early '70s, we were barely pulling 3-4k per game at the AH.]

Too lazy to look it up. When's the last time PSU had a legit basketball team?

Truly legit? 2001 when they reached the Sweet 16. They've only made the tourney twice this century, and not since 2011. They won the NIT in 2009 and 2018, however.

MSU wasn't really a threat to winning the B1G. They are overrated. If it wasn't PSU, then i think some other teams would beat them and keep them from winning the B1G.

I like the old school kansas uniforms. Reminds of the james naismith days

I guess our win over MSU at home three weeks ago is a little less glamorous than it seemed at the time.;)

Pennsylvania is enormous and State College is in the middle of nowhere. On a football Saturday, people are willing to travel a few hours each way for a traditionally strong team, but no one's leaving work early to do that on a Tuesday for a hoops program that's never had any sustained success. That leaves the students, who are mostly from pro-town areas (Philly, Pittsburgh, NJ) and have a familiar "let me know when they're ranked and then I'll go" attitude.

John Harrar is just awesome. Such a good win for Penn State. Shrews is gonna have that program in a good place in a few years. Guy can coach.

Having been to State College, I definitely understand the isolated argument, especially during the week. However, even their weekend games when they are halfway decent are poorly attended. I suppose an even bigger argument could be made about how Ohio State, with their success in basketball and large metro area, can’t come close to filling their arena. Just very strange.
