2016 Coaching Carousel

Did anyone catch the "Second Half" on B&B today? Bernstein said Whitman has two coaches targeted and both are still coaching in the tournament. He will try to pitch those two guys, if he can't get one of those two Groce be back next year. Any ideas who those two guys could be??

Biiiiiiiig troll job.

Now he can spin a yarn that Whitman "failed" to land a replacement.

I'd personally be a little surprised if he isn't shopping the job through back channels at this point. I have felt all along Groce would be back, but with the decisive, bold move on the football hire, it looking increasingly like Groce has lost control of the program, all added to the fact that Whitman's vote of confidence didn't make any mention of next season, I'm not so sure.

If he is shopping, Whitman is far too smart to have leaked it out that he is. Especially after giving a public vote of confidence. On multiple occasions no less.

Agreed, that he would be smart enough not to leak it out. Also think he is smart enough to do his do diligence on top flight coaches. Maybe use a trusted booster to filter things out. He would be derelict in his duties if he was not prepared to respond if openings for elite coaches appear. After publicly commenting on Groce, he would need a home run hire once again to make that move. An NBA coach such as Hoiberg, if there is a shake up in Chicago, may qualify. Especially since most programs would have filled their vacancies by then. If Billy Donovan is not enamored with the NBA game, especially if Durant bolts, would be an absolute no brainer.

Not sure if this is completely applicable "news", but I read a "Top 10 coaches on the hot seat" article this morning that was published in late February. Some names that have relevance to U of I basketball or could have a domino effect if they are let go:
Travis Ford, Kim Anderson, Bruce Weber, Brian Gregory, Josh Pastner.

It will be very interesting to see what OSU does with their (yet-to-be-announced) vacancy as I see that as the only program with more resources than U of I to attract a strong coach with Midwestern ties. Mizzou's athletic department is in overhaul-mode, too, so should be interesting to see if they stand pat or move on.

Travis Ford is definitely out. Josh Pastner should be but that buy-out is ridiculous.

I think it would be great if Whitman called up the show today and put Dan in his place...I know it's not going to happen, but it would be awesome!
Put him in his place about what? Whitman already did the same exact thing with football. Why is it a stretch to think he's doing it for basketball as well? I happen to think that Whitman would be dumb to NOT put out feelers.

Whitman didn't give Cubit a vote of confidence prior to the firing. It would have to be a complete homerun hire for him to even letting Groce go this year. Possible, yes, but it's more than likely that those guys are just trolling Illinois.

If Bernstein's assertion has any shred of validity, do you believe that Cuonzo Martin would be one of the candidates? It would be hard to imagine anyone else having more credibility in the East St. Louis / Belleville area.

Bernstein's comments place Illinois in a 'no win' situation and he knows it. If Whitman denies it then Bernstein can reply "Of course you'd say that since this is going on in back channels". If Whitman says nothing and Groce continues as coach, then Bernstein can say that Whitman's targets weren't interested. If Whitman does fire Groce before the start of the 2016-17 season, then Bernstein can say that he (Bernstein) knew it all along.

If things go well tomorrow evening, add Matt McCall to that list. I liked him when he came to Springfield.

Matt McCall in his first year of HC experience @ a DI school is and should not be put anywhere near that list of 4 regardless of what he does tomorrow night. Let's give him some time.

It doesn't put Illinois in a no-win situation as much as it puts Bernstein in a no-lose situation. That's how he rolls.

That is your opinion. That doesn't mean it is others. He was head of basketball operations for a National champ. He was also Billy D's assistant for four elite 8 appearances while there.

And now he has taken his first team to the dance in his first year.

For the record, I referenced Archie and Marshall at the next Shaka and Stevens in terms of their high profile and constant speculation for every open Power Five job, not necessarily in terms of their quality as coaches.

McCall might be a great coach, but he has a long way to go to get that kind of attention paid to him.

(Of course, that "long way" could be two weeks from now. March Madness!)
