2016 Coaching Carousel

Agree. Don't think I'd support the hire at Illinois. But he could make a heckuva HC at a good mid-major. I like Amaker, too. Think he likes where he is, maybe?

Amaker had a couple of good years at Seton Hall. Was thouroghly medoicre in multiple seasons at Michigan. Seems to have found his niche at Harvard.

It would take a bit of cash, but Illinois should consider Tom Thibodeau as coach. It would help immensely in recruiting (being former NBA coach who coach USA olympic teams, coached NBA all star games, coached NBA MVP's, and is well known in Chicago). He wouldn't tolerate the nonsense that has gone on with Illini basketball and would have Illinois playing great defense. Furthermore, he has coached injury decimated rosters to the NBA playoffs and got players like John Lucas III, Nate Robinson, etc. play within his system to accomplish that success. Make Dee Brown who bleeds orange and blue an assistant coach to help acclimate Thibodeau to Illinois. If Illinois wants to get back to the years of going to the NCAA tournament every year, playing in sweet sixteens, elite eights, and final fours then Tom Thibodeau is our coach.

I don't think Thibs' personality would work well with college kids.

EDIT: However I do like the idea of Illinois just hiring a bunch of former Chicago pro coaches:)

Personality may not fit, but that can probably be said about a lot of college coaches. That's why you add a few Illini alumni like Dee Brown or Roger Powell as assistants. It worked for SMU with Larry Brown and it has shown on the court and in recruiting.

And now they are on probation just like all of Larry's teams in the past. I'm not against a coaching change but if one is made pay real money and hire an established college coach.

I wouldn't be against an established college coach either. As long as we don't poach another career assistant from a mid major.

I really think if the right money is offered and a change is made JW can get a real coach (he changed the perception of the athletic department on day 1). The reason we have who we have is Mike Thomas (who's writing the book on his Illini era) wouldn't spend money. He tried to prove he was smarter than everyone else and grab guys from smaller conferences and pay them less money. That guy made 3 hires and 1 is hanging on by a thread.....

He had Sumlin for 3-3.5 million a year. Until TAM opened up at the last second. He was offering Shaka and Stevens 3 million. To say he was trying to be smarter than everyone else is a lie. He swung for the fences, and missed.

There's a reason why Maurice Cheeks didn't succeed anywhere. He's not a good coach.

Who are some of the Brad Stevens/Shaka Smart-type up-and-comers around college basketball these days? I've heard good things about Valpo's Bryce Drew, but I'm unfamiliar with the national landscape.
Kermit Davis probably will be considered for some opening positions

I'm a Greg Marshall fan, but he has been all Mark Few like and has not entertained leaving Wichita in the past. Interesting search

with ron baker and fred van vleet leaving, does he have any good prospects coming in? if not, right now could be his best chance to make a bigger jump...assuming he even wants to.

I don't think JW has a choice here. Has to stick it out with Groce for at least one more year. I would say, probably a few years. 1. He doesn't have a coach he can get right now. No need to go and pull same mistake we have in past with a coach you HOPE will get job done. 2. Buyout is like 2.4 million, plus for a really good coach, what? 3 million year? You're looking at something like another 10-12 million commitment? Don't see it. 3. Recruiting hit. I really don't like putting all of our eggs in the Tilmon basket, been burned to many times before. We need Goodwin badly, but if you miss on one...... was it worth it to keep Groce? I've gone back and forth about him. Bottom line is I don't think he can compete in B1G and we need to be in the process of finding a new coach, if it takes a year then fine... Take time, line something up and then make the move.

Given the uncertainty at Cal, I have decided 2 ask out of my LOI and re-open my recruitment. This was not an easy decision, but the right 1.

I didn't realize there was an uncertainty at Cal?

I know he fell just short today, but Brad Underwood is rumored to hold K-State as his dream job. How does K-State not consider letting Weber go and snagging up Underwood? Being in Kansas, one thing I know is K-State is loaded with $$$$

I'm sure they're considering just that.
