2016 Coaching Carousel

I think he was a good recruiter, but slightly over hyped. He got Lawson, but him and his brother are from Memphis and I believe he had to hire their dad to get them to come.

I think there is lots of evidence that the bloom was coming off the Pastner rose on the recruiting front over the past couple of years as it became clearer and clearer what a fraud he is as a coach.

Not unlike the Ron Zook situation here, really.

I anticipate him being a failure on the recruiting front at Georgia Tech.

He landed Lawson cause he hired his dad. He also got gift wrapped a program that top 15 at the time, and now it dropped a lot.

Anyways, since Tubby is a better coach, he will coach up the talent that is on the roster.

There are still the four other five star players he recruited. I agree Tubby is a better coach, but not worth the price. I think Memphis will be better in the short term, but their program will remain at the same level until they bring in a coach of higher caliber. This is a guy Bruce Weber absolutely owned, Memphis would have been better off hiring him and could have saved themselves some money.

I totally agree.

All in all, it seems like it's been a pretty quiet coaching carousel this year, with not too many major changes. Any word on any NBA teams looking for college coaches?

I think it is. Lakers don't make this move if they don't know for sure who it is.

This isn't firing Cubit after an extension on your first day. This is replacing one of the worst coaches in the league with zero record of player development. The Lakers don't make this move if they are trying to tank again for the lottery next season. Otherwise this move should have been made a year ago.

IE Luke Walton. I can't see them going the college route for a coach unless it's Coach K

Remember who's calling the shots. Jimmy Buss. I could see him thinking Calipari is a great name hire. I think Ollie would be perceived as a good hire. But I agree Luke Walton would probably be my first choice if I was making this hire.

As far as college coaches, I think you'll see Ollie's name since it would help with the Durrant recruitment (allegedly) and I'm a little surprised Jay Wright's name wasn't on there.

Laker's Head Coach - this would get the coaching carousel moving again!

Per @ramonashelburne, Kevin Ollie, Jay Wright, Roy Williams, Tom Izzo and John Calipari among potential names

Cal and the Lakers is intriguing. That would be a move that speaks to a change in the way NBA roster construction is done, especially for teams like the Lakers, where the focus is on your ability to attract free agents. Recruiting, essentially. And what is also critical when assembling that kind of team is to be able to manage the big personalities not just of the players themselves, but their agents and their broader management teams, keeping everyone playing hard, playing together, and on the same page.

Ability to appeal to the psychology of elite basketball players as a recruiter and as a coach, ability to manage prima donna personalities, comfort in the media circus that always surrounds the Lakers, familiarity with and popularity among prominent agents, you start to list off things you'd want in a coach for this specific job and it starts to sound an awful lot like John Calipari.

Cal seems very happy at UK, but if there's any NBA job I can see him leaving for, it's this one.

But I agree Luke Walton would probably be my first choice if I was making this hire.

Very young with very little experience. I would be worry he would get swallowed up by the spotlight there, and I put next to zero stock in his interim stint as head coach with the Warriors.

Walton played in LA for many years and was also briefly an assistant with their D-League team. Mitch Kupchak, the Buss family, and perhaps very importantly, a certain Buss sibling's paramour are very familiar with Walton as a person and if he's just a stone cold killer who is destined to be great, I could buy taking the plunge on a young guy a la Brad Stevens in Boston. But it's a risk for sure.
