2016 Illini Golf - Road to the Championship

Was out at lunch and came back hopeful.
Terrific stuff guys ! Every match play victory is an achievement.
I noticed that the 16 round totals only varied by 10 strokes between #1 and #8 teams.
That is 10 strokes over 16 rounds, well less than 1 stroke per round.
Every match is going to be tough. These guys are all really good.

Well done, Illini.
Take down the ducks

Reading the notes on here and looking at Charlie's score and just realized that I learned something today.

While Charlie winning 1up usually means that after 18 holes he had a 1 hole advantage.
But today, because the team match was completed, it just means that he was 1 up after "x" holes. Not necessarily 18 holes. I didn't know that until now.

The TV guys are saying that Yi (at least, I think I heard that correctly) was running a 102 fever that whole first round and is getting an IV for fluids during the break.

Surprised Oregon put Wise 5. Smart choice if it matters but match could be over by the time it gets to him. Like PKs in soccer, put your best guys 1 and 4

I think it's coming down to this pairing. Meyer is due for a good match play performance; however, Wise is on fire.

Go Illini!

Golfweek recap

EUGENE, Ore. – The quarterfinal match between Illinois and South Carolina went about as one would expect.

The Fighting Illini got out to an early lead at Eugene Country Club and the underdog Gamecocks showed some fight before the favored group ultimately prevailed.

But afterward, Illini head coach Mike Small wasn’t assuming he had uncovered the secret to NCAA Championship match play.

“What I’ve learned about match play here is it’s very fleeting and unpredictable,” said Small, the Illini’s head man of 16 years. “It is a quick sprint, and things happen the don’t make a lot of sense.”

Not really how it works. Watch the periscope clip. You have to react to the other team's players. You want to keep your best player in your pocket, otherwise you end up with your best player going against the other teams 4 or 5, which is a waste (though that happened to SC and we still won that point).

Illinois was keeping Danielson in their pocket for the same reason.

Illinois also has the advantage in that Detry is every bit as good as Danielson. Oregon has Wise and not much else.

re:lineups

Also interesting to contrast this with college tennis, where you have to set your lineup 1-6 by best to worst. Not sure which is better, but I'm guessing the better teams win more often in college tennis.

Attached is the hole-by-hole analysis for the semi-final match vs. Oregon. I tried to gussy it up a bit for this round.

If things actually work on this way it would come down to Liparelli vs. Yi!

Lets go Illini!!!

why is the golf channel broadcasting the quarters again when the semis are live?

Match play is tough for TV to schedule. All of the morning matches were decided fairly quickly. If some of them had been closer, with matches going to extra holes, then the semis might have had to start later. And they don't really care too much about the first 6 or so holes in a match, it doesn't really start to get interesting until the players make the turn.

Even though the Illini have now played this course 6, 7 or 8 times in the past week, Oregon has played it 100's of times, I would guess. That is their advantage and we'll just have to overcome it.
