2016 Illini Golf - Road to the Championship

Got a chance to talk to write a few Danielson family members yesterday and they couldn't have been nicer and they couldn't have been prouder. Mom in particular was so thrilled. It was truly touching to see. We had a delightful time walking with them.

Charlie was quite focused. When I left, after the last group holed out, he was on the putting green practicing. I'm sure he hours to move up a few spots today, but regardless they are all having a great time

We'll see Charlie out on Nationwide (or whatever the latest sponsor it is now) Tour or the Big Show next year. Coach Small continues to consistently crank out tour-ready players. In addition, they're fine young men. Men's golf is the crown jewel of Illini athletics. :shield:

I'm sure we'll see Charlie somewhere next season, but it's not easy getting there. Brian Campbell made it to the finals of Q school but didn't get his web.com tour card so he's having to try and get in via Monday qualifiers, sponsor's exemptions, etc. Trying to make a living as a professional golfer can be challenging.

And let's not forget that golf is different than most sports in that outisde of being a phenom players get better as they age. Some guys disappear for years and come back better due to a new swing, injuries, etc.

Charlie will turn pro this summer. Not sure if he'll be very visible to us, because as mentioned there is a difficult apprenticeship to go through to make it to the bright lights, but he will be out there trying in a few more months. This per his parents. I doubt that this news surprises anyone.

Yeah, and it's such a mental sport. That's probably the difference for most of these guys. They have the talent, but can they get it done under pressure? Langley, Points and Guthrie all had their cards last year, now Points and Guthrie are back to playing Monday qualifiers to try and get in. They were both down in Florida but aren't going to get into the Honda Classic, unfortunately. Points has had a nice career and made a ton of money, so I'm not too worried about him.

I'd hope so. If you have that talent, you have to at least chase that dream and give it a fair shot. But as I mentioned, it's a tough life to get there. I was checking those Monday qualifier results, a lot of very recognizable names on that tee sheet trying to get in. Hope Charlie can put together a good team of folks to sponsor him so he can give it a good go.

As the year progresses, it will interesting to see if Lipparelli overtakes Burge as the team's fifth man.

We were tied for 5th but then a kid from Florida was DQ'd and that dropped them from the lead to well back into the pack. If Detry can find his game then we'll be in good shape.

I saw the DQ, sucks for his teammates. What did he do do to get disqualified? Too many clubs, cheating, ...?

Signed incorrect scorecard. Second time the kid has done it this season I guess. Too bad.

I always wondered how this even happens. Are there spotters on the course counting how many strokes a player takes? Does everyone in the grouping score one another? No idea. I know the pros have caddies and I can sort of see (not really) a player signing a bad scorecard. These kids are doing their own scoring right?
