2016 Illini Golf - Road to the Championship

I've never played this level of tournament golf, but in events that I have played in, each player keeps someone else's scorecard. I normally keep my own score on the card that I am maintaining for another player as a separate line. Then I compare the score for me that I kept to the one that someone else kept for me. I have to sign the one that someone kept for me. So, I have to make sure that everything recorded for me by another is accurate. Laziness will get you DQ'ed.

I always wondered how this even happens. Are there spotters on the course counting how many strokes a player takes? Does everyone in the grouping score one another? No idea. I know the pros have caddies and I can sort of see (not really) a player signing a bad scorecard. These kids are doing their own scoring right?

Another player in your group keeps your score and you both must agree, by signing the card, on the score for each hole. If you sign a card for a higher score than you made you get that higher score, if you sign for a lower score then it's DQ. The total score you write on the card doesn't matter. They look at each individual hole. If you just did bad math adding up the scores it wouldn't matter.

Thanks guys, I had no idea it was that way. I always assumed these guys kept their own score card and that that was what they turned in.

With just a few holes left to play on Tuesday, looks a bit rough.
USC running away with it right now, at -4, while next best is +4. Of course, these are amateurs and anything can happen, but that is a nice cushion. Illinois at +7 with just 4 or 5 individual holes left to go. Probably going to be about 5th to start the day tomorrow

Yes, just 18 today. USC really killed it yesterday. That's the thing about golf, you can't play defense. :)

Still anything can happen today, but that's a big hill to climb and USC is probably too good to slip very far.

Probably will lose that #1 ranking. Not all bad, will give them some incentive to get it back.

Illini finishing up at the Valspar Invite today. Not a great showing, though they did play better today. Tough to compete when 2 of the 5 guys are struggling and both Hardy and Burge did not have their "A" game.

Looking at Illinois’ Valspar Collegiate individual golf results, I hope Coach Small is able to right the ship during the next couple of months. With Lipparelli’s score, I assume Small is considering replacing one of the current team members with Lipparelli in some future matches to see if Lipparelli can handle the pressure associated with playing as a team member.

I believe Coach Small sets the lineup based on scores shot in practice rounds the week prior. So if Lipparelli wants to be one of the 5 spots, he needs to earn it by beating out Burge or Hardy on the golf course. Not sure if the coach would override that or not. Also not sure how much they've been able to play outdoors yet to have those practice competitions.

Lipparelli would have helped move them up a couple of spots in the standings, but they still would have been way behind Texas.

Thomas Pieters halves his match today with Adam Scott in Austin. Gutsy performance considering the tragedy in his homeland.

Looks like Coach Small is making the change:

"This is a fun tournament with some top teams competing in it," Small said. "I would like to go down there and compete and keep making progress towards our goal of playing well heading into the Big Ten Championships. I'm also excited to see how freshman Edoardo Lipparelli responds as he will be in the lineup this week. There are a lot of different things I'm going to be looking for this weekend, so come next Monday I'm going to have a much better idea of where we stand heading into the last few weeks of the season."

Was that a typo, saying that it is a 6248 yard par 72 course?
That is shorter than I play. Maybe 7248?

Edit: Looks like it is over 7,000 yards. Their site says 7160 if I remember perfectly. Seems unlikely that it is anywhere near 6248

Nice 2nd round by Lipparelli, only Illini under par.

A night-and-day difference from yesterday... maybe a bit lucky to get out of there in 3rd. Looks like it was just a much tougher day of golf.

So Georgia, Illinois, and Texas are looking up at Augusta at the end of this one? We can tip a cap to that. Good on them for knowing their course.
