Illinois has played in the last eight NCAA Championships, and four times in last five years the Illini have advanced to match play. In 2013, Illinois lost to Alabama in the championship match, recording its best NCAA finish in program history.

Small’s teams continue to stay relevant.

Many times with northern-climate golf programs we see a pattern of team performance with ups and downs. Drop-offs are not looked at that poorly because they are expected when snow can cover the ground for many months of the year. It is a cyclical thing. And programs can be judged by how often they bounce back.

Not in Champaign. There is no need to bounce back. It’s more like, here we are again.

Really, there is only one thing left for Illinois golf to accomplish: win the NCAA title.

Will this year be the year?

Beautiful article. The press for this program continues to be stellar. I really hope this is the year they win it all.

Against the long odds (north), Small has built the model program. Talented golfers, great kids, strong family ties, academic excellence....doesn't get much better than this. Now just need a national title to put on the shelf. :shield:

This round is basically 8 or 9 teams trying to be in the top 5 to move on to the national finals. The small schools aren't going to be competitive here, i.e. Campbell or SDSU. It's only 54 holes so the important part is to just take care of business and not shoot yourself in the foot. Of course Coach Small has a different perspective, he wants the team to try and win it. Having that mentality is a big part of his coaching philosophy. But we fans can view it a little differently. :)

I had forgotten how fast the team scores can change in this format. Not unusual at all to see a 3-4 stroke swing if you wait 10 minutes to refresh the score. Good to see us starting off the day strong!
