2016 Illini Golf - Road to the Championship

#526
And now on to the East Lake Cup in Atlanta (re-match of the final four) in Atlanta late October, early November.

-- Illinois (last year's winner) loses Detry and Danielson

-- Oregon loses Wise (going pro), Foushee, McIver, Carter. (Raza is back)

-- LSU loses only one: Wright

-- USC loses Gojuangco, Levitt

LSU looks like team to beat.

Match play again.
No player is from Atlanta.

I think Golf Channel carries it.

The rule in basketball doesn't change for the finals though only through the regionals. If the finals are in the carrier dome, it doesn't disqualify Syracuse. I imagine as in basketball different schools sponsor sites & you can move teams in regionals, but once you get to the finals it is what it is.

In fairness, it might also be worth noting in 2005 we played in Chicago, Indy, & St. Louis on the way to the championship game...not home court, but the best you could hope for.

So congrats to Oregon, well done.

Although home advantage is important in basketball, it is much more important in golf. All basketball courts are the same size and dimensions, but every golf course is different.

Exactly. Plus teams that have to travel usually bring a lot of fans with them to negate the home court advantage somewhat.

Other than family, how many Illini fans and cheerleaders traveled to Eugene?

Nick Hardy birdies 4 of last 5 holes and is going to win US Open qualifying. The future looks very bright for him and Illini. Congrats Nick.

With Nick and the Bookworm Assassin (Dylan Meyer), Illini will remain a power next year in B1G and hopefully nationally.

I played high school golf at St. Charles country club our coach was one of the pros there. It's not Oakmont but 28 under for a 72 hole score is legitimately insane. he birdied 32 of 72 holes.

Dylan Meyer wins the Western Am today, beating #2 world ranked Sam Horsfield in the final. Very prestigious amateur event, probably just behind the US Am. 72 holes of stroke play, then 4 rounds of match play. Great win for @DJ_DFunk!

I need a putting lesson from Dylan.

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Dylan Meyer is nearly 500 miles from his hometown of Evansville, Ind. Funny enough, though, Meyer has run into more people this week at Oakland Hills Country Club who have Evansville ties than he expected.

“I think I’ve met seven people who are from there,” Meyer said.

The Evansville natives will get to watch their hometown kid another day at the 116th U.S. Amateur.

Meyer, with his elementary-school friend and former high-school teammate on the bag, knocked off the world’s second-ranked amateur, Sam Horsfield, in 19 holes in Thursday’s Round of 16.

“Coming into this match, I knew it was going to be a tough one,” said Meyer, who nearly two weeks earlier had beaten Horsfield in the final of the Western Amateur. “It was going to be the hardest match that I would have in the bracket and whatnot coming down to the championship match. Sam is a great player. He’s so good. … But my game this week coming in and playing in match play, I’m kind of feeling it.”

Looking like a repeat of the NCAA's. :(

Dylan Meyer is down two with three holes to play against a much weaker local player who has a large cheering section behind him. (It's like Oregon playing on their home course all over again.)

Dylan was cruising, up two through nine holes before play was suspended for a while because of rain. When play resumed the momentum completely switched, with the other guy winning five of the first six holes.
