Just got home to check scores. Wow. Boom. Mic drop.

Mike Small's teams set the bar high with expectations... and still meet or exceed them with great regularity. It's pretty amazing.

What a day. Go get 'em, Illini!

Blergh at the 7 AM start time, but everything that is within the team's control is awesome! Dunno how accurate the tourney seeding is in golf, but it seems good that the other 3 teams in our half of the bracket are 3 of the 4 lowest seeds left, right?

It just hit me - the early start is because they play the quarterfinals AND semifinals tomorrow, right?

The 276 carded by the Illini yesterday was the lowest round of the 105 rounds played in this year's tournament. Nice timing.

That is definitely how the women did it, so I assume the same is true of the men. Two matches today, one more tomorrow. :illinois:

Seedings don't matter a whole lot because it's match play. That format really levels the playing field because it's a hole by hole match. So it's not out of the question for a player to win a match and have a worse 18 hole score than the guy he beat. Last year Illinois was the heavy favorite but lost to USC largely because Rico Hoey holed out for eagle from ~190 yards, huge momentum turn in his match and the team match.

It just hit me - the early start is because they play the quarterfinals AND semifinals tomorrow, right?

Yep, then the finals tomorrow. For the teams that survive the morning, the afternoon will be a real grind. As much mental as physical.

Great statistical breakdown. This bracket sets up as well as the Illini could've hoped. All teams remaining are threats to win it all but having South Carolina in the quarters and Texas and USC on the other side of the bracket is very advantageous.

A few little stats for tomorrow:

Scoring by hole type (average / total to par):
Par 3s - Illinois 3.23 / +18, South Carolina 3.33 / +26
Par 4s - Illinois 4.16 / +38, South Carolina 4.13 / +32
Par 5s - Illinois 4.45 / -22, South Carolina 4.78 / -9

Order in regular team lineup (with individual seed for top 100 players) plus score in stroke play by matchup:
1. (18) Detry +3 vs. 4. (76) Huskey +11
5. Lipparelli +17 vs. 2. (9) NeSmith +10
4. (36) Meyer +5 vs. 5. Stevens +15
3. (90) Hardy +7 vs. 1. Kelly +9
2. (4) Danielson +2 vs. 3. Starke +4

I think we worked over SC pretty good in the match up selection.

As the higher seed, we put the first player up (Detry). They put up their 2nd best player Huskey to match. They then put up their best ranked player (Smith), so we punted that match with our worst guy and took the heavy advantage in the three remaining matches.

I think they should have either put Smith up against Detry, hope they could win that and whoever ended up with Lipparelli, and then try to get lucky in one of the remaining matches.

Stroke averages are good data, but again it's now match play so that's a different animal. It's much more about playing your opponent vs playing the course like you do in stroke play.

Well WVC, from that it loos like we're certainly in the preferred half of the bracket!

Looks like TV coverage doesn't start until at least 11 AM central, possibly with a long boring "pre-game" show again?

Still 3-1-1 but Detry, Meyer and Hardy are 2UP after 7, 6 and 5 holes, respectively. Lipparelli is All Square after 4, and Danielson is down one after 3 holes. They started on the front nine.

They started on the front nine.

They won't need to do split tees for match play, so will always start on #1.

Also a 1up or 2up lead on the front nine isn't really worth much. If you get to 3 or 4 up, then it's a real lead.

Good to see Eduardo hanging with NeSmith. He just needs to stay in that match as long as possible, a win would be gravy.

Attached is a hole by hole overview for the quarterfinal match that is underway (sorry I didn't post earlier).

Yellow shading is a hole where both players had the same average over the first four rounds while green shading goes to the lowest average over the stroke play rounds.

ILL!

Neat, will be cool to look post-match and see if this has any correlation whatsoever to the match play scores.
