2017 Basketball Transfer Thread

Think we need to get our shopping carts out. Not a real good thing again waiting 2 weeks and get nothing. Hopeful but losing faith in either.

Store shelves in the 2017 recruiting/transfer aisles appear to be bare right now at both Dollar General and Kohls other than Alstork, Agau, and McIntosh on layaway for somebody. Any other suggestions for the Illini? One big 6'10" guy would fill the top part of our cart and a 6'5" guy underneath would be nice. ;)

Get this done, no excuses....

If he's a fit and there's a chance, I'm sure BU will go after him 100%. However, we're not at a point where we can expect him to cover our roster issues for 2017 just a month or two into the job, and a few months before practices. IMO that's like expecting miracles.

Also, assuming he is a fit, it's not like we're the only school looking for help with an establish talented big for 2017.

Since firing Groce, we lost a very shaky Tilmon commit, and have swapped Pickett for Smith. To me, that's a win, and you can't hang the gap at center on Underwood.

This is an important point. Tilmon playing at University of Illinois was like trying to keep a wave from going back out to sea, and Underwood can't be faulted for that. Groce relied on a grad transfer big who turned into a redshirt big... all while failing to land a HS big.

The cupboard is just plain bare, and that's all there is to it. It's happened to coincide with a thin selection for stopgap measures.

The cupboard being bare makes me think of Groce's goodbye press conference stating how proud he was about leaving the Illinois program in a better place than he received it. Don't think that's the case.....

I would like McIntosh as much as the other, we discussed this a month ago and I thought he was a heavy lean to Minnesota. Had some tie there. Just saying.

If we miss on McIntosh, Alstork, Agau, and lose JCL to transfer, do we maybe lose at least a little confidence in Underwood and this staff? I know I'm by no means ready to jump off the ledge, but if all of this happens it will be a bit concerning in my opinion.

Why do we need McIntosh? I am so tired of these transfers from Mid Majors that end up here. There is a reason they went to these schools in the first place. Not one has been impressive at the Big level, including Rice. Although he did stop the offense from performing well.

Disagree. Rice was a P5 player no doubt!

I'm not jumping off the Underwood train either, but if all of that happens, it's more than a little concerning.

To each their own, but I don't think many would agree with in you in regard to Rice and McIntosh. Rice was a fantastic player for Illinois (though the ball did tend to stick to him and I've heard his attitude was very ego driven). Everything people have said about McIntosh has been glowing. The kid was preseason MVC player of the year and would likely be one of our better players next year if he came to Illinois. You'll eat your words when he ends up at Minnesota or Wisconsin and destroys us next year.

Have to disagree with you on Rice. While he never completely meshed with Hill and Nunn, that doesn't mean he wasn't P5 quality. That dude was a man amongst boys most nights in the B1G. He even dominated B1G DPOY Raphael Davis for portions of the game.

And recruiting is an imperfect science...just because one player goes to a mid major doesn't mean that they cannot make an impact at the P5 level. Sometimes a player is just undersized in HS or went to a small school.

Well when he said it DJ was still on the team, Pickett and TJ had signed. So yeah when he left it was better then when he came here.

Man, we need some good news. Maybe I was drinking the bread Underwood Kool-Aid, but I was hoping that high school kids would be more discerning and be able to see what could be happening at Illinois. His seal Catch-22 again. Underwood had better be a magician and live up to his reputation.

I need some sugar for my Kool-Aid. Come on, Mr. U.

DJ makes very little difference in this discussion. Weber left Paul and DJR who were able to carry Groce to his only tournament appearance.

If 5 years from now we are saying Black and Finke carried BU to his only tournament appearance, I'll eat my hat. :thumb:

If McIntosh doesn't return to the Redbirds, I hope he plays with the Illini. McIntosh is a versatile player capable of playing the 3 or 4 . This would be like getting a 4 star player with already 3 years experience in college ball. From what I've seen of Alstork and Agua, McKyle is the best of the 3.

No.

Dropping Underwood & Staff into this recruiting cycle this late -- even for transfers -- was going to create difficulties. New hires are behind the 8-ball by default. They don't have much of a product to sell, other than their old program... which, after all, is their old program.

Cuonzo is a dazzling exception to this in great part due to his having hired sombody's daddy. Even the worst Mizzou homers will admit this.

Would definitely be an acquired taste.

Not for me, and I would *hate* to lose JCL. I think he's got some serious untapped potential.

IMO a lot of people don't understand what fit really means. Maybe it's all part of the Groce hangover, where he talked about fit but could never get a working system. From what I've seen of Underwood's style of play, you don't just plug and play personnel. Without guys with certain skills who are committed to his type of movement and system, it's not gonna work. I think that will be clearer with more context (i.e. after we've seen it for a season). My point is to be patient. There's going to be an adjustment, including picking up the ideal pieces.

when Groce left and said he left things better then when he got here, he had , Black, Finke, DJ, AJ, JCL, TJL, Kipper, and Trent, DaWill, Pickett and JT all on board, and most would say Smith was as well. So he left things better then Weber left him, what BU has now isn't the same thing as what was here when Groce made the statement
