We will not get a kid that has those kind of offers. We NEVER win these type of recruitments. And Mike Thorne doesn't count.

Why wouldn't Thorne count? We did get him. Just because he ended up with unfortunate injuries means he doesn't count?

Coach O played his college ball at Pitt. Not sure if that is something that got us in.
Nice. Johnson's father Gilbert played at Pitt 1988-1990, Antigua played at Pitt 1991-1995, it's likely they knew each other.

Mike Thorne is an instructive example, actually.

Transfers look at the process differently than high school recruits in a way that advantages Illinois.

Not saying we'll get this specific kid, but I don't just write off a transfer when he gets a "better" offer the way I would a HS kid.

He was also on staff at Pitt from 03-08 I think. Not that the timeline overlaps there but Orlando definitely has connections to Pitt

For those, like me, who aren't familiar with Johnson.
