Just curious, but who else did he predict correctly?

Mark Smith to Illinois was very much in doubt at many points in his recruitment, but almost all the smoke during the last week or two of his recruitment seemed to favor us. Plus, we're talking about an Edwardsville kid committing to Illinois -- that's not the most inconceivable thing.

Not diminishing the correct call, but 1 for 1 isn't really a track record.

I actually didn't have many sources under groce, hard to believe I know. Just happened to find a few guys that will share with me when they hear things. I know how this board goes, say one wrong thing and everyone beats ya up, I'm not worried, I'll keep saying what I can when I can

It's been Illinois or SC, almost from the get go. Ive heard he could end up at either school and LSU would be the 3rd option, but my main guy is telling me Illinois. Louisville was never a serious threat

Lucky's source is saying SC and Cash's is saying UI. I guess we'll find out soon. I think it's fair to say this one is more ambiguous than Smith's final few days so it could go either way.

Both of these posters don't seem to be looking for message board fame and simply seem to want to pass along relatively reliable info from time to time.

Nobody should come down on either of them regardless if the news is good or bad for us. Thanks for posting you two!

I agree with Hoppy and am glad for the updates from Lucky and Cash. We'll know soon enough.

The truth is the source for any recruit could be the recruit themself and someone could still get bad info or info that ultimately changes in decision day.

We are too hard on "insiders." Let them share what they know in peace.

Agau visit odu yesterday, no tweet I saw or reports. Curious thought , nothing on Coleby, could we be on the real quiet till we know something on Agau ? Just Food for thought.;)

To be clear, I'm not beating up on you, nor is anybody else from what I can tell. The way I see it, if you put emotional stock in "inside information" and it turns out wrong, the only person to blame is yourself. Nobody forces you to put stock in what various insiders say.

I just find the entire insider thing interesting from a purely psychological point of view. The manner in which people breath a sigh of relief because an insider throws up :hailtotheorange: or :chief: always amused me.

Of course, I hope you're right. I'm just playing the role of skeptic when I hear somebody say "oh, don't worry, he gets it right!" -- especially when he has gotten exactly 1 prediction right. Let's hope this becomes #2.

INSIDER --- My assumption has always been that an "insider" has a really solid connection such as one of the following:

(1) brother/sister working as an Admin in the AD's office, perhaps responsible for reading AD's emails and/or placing faxes on his desk,

(2) best friends with a high school or AAU coach,

(3) high school teammate of a current UofI Assistant Coach

I've always thought these types of connections are how leaks occur. It's exactly how the rumor mill works in the office at my day job. Anything else is purely speculation.

Still no news on Akoy Agau? Need the big guy!

No doubt about it, and I think he'd be a nice fit. I know I'm in the minority here, but if I had to choose between Agua and Alstork....give me Alstork. Just don't think we can have enough scoring wings on this team. I was hoping DJW would grow into that role, but alas...

I'm also confident that BU et al will address the big man issue somehow, someway. Maybe that's wishful thinking.

Man, if I had a one year shot to get myself to the NBA, of that group South Carolina is the last place I'd choose. Frank Martin would definitely be an acquired taste and you had better be able to put defense and team ahead of your personal goals.

If he thinks he's go down there and have the green light from the second he steps on campus, I think he's getting bad advice. South Carolina is the flavor of the month because of the Final Four. That team won because they played D, not because they had NBA lottery picks or because they were a dynamic offensively.

Illinois makes sense, if his goal is to get to the next level. That's without my O & B goggles on. At Illinois, he'd be in a guard driven, high pace offense, with a lot of time and a lot of shots available...he could be a showcase player for one year. I have to believe that's what he's looking for.

To gamble that one year on mixing nicely with Frank Martin.....eeeesh.

Playing devils advocate, what if he wants/needs to learn to play defense? I believe he is a proven scorer, so maybe he can show himself to be an efficient scorer v volume scorer, and a good defender.

Can anyone give Mike Finke the benefit of the doubt? BU's offense will be totally different from anything we saw with JG. Having a true banging in the post big isn't as important has having bigs that like to run and score in transition. With Antigua and Coleman on the coaching staff, I think Finke has a lot more upside now as a big. Any thoughts?

(4) Know/are a high-powered booster.

Marc Smythe's cake was leaked by a booster.

The concern is on defense more so than offense. Finke's not a good defender or rebounder. And beyond that it's simply the fact that we need more depth. Black is foul prone and we need another big desperately to help out. Not that tough to understand.

I agree with you on Finke and believe he will be very good offensively. I also believe he will be adequate defensively. My fear is an injury and foul problems. Just seems like we have depth at the other positions but none at center defensively. I don't see LB guarding opposing centers without fouling.

Yes, give him the benefit of the doubt. And then go out and get a solid second option/backup, too. Belt and suspenders are required here, because if he turns out NOT to work out -- either offensively or defensively in this new scheme and with this new coach with which he has no experience and won't even have the benefit of spring practices and workouts -- we could be in serious trouble.

heard the same...why I posted...thought he had kind of flipped from firm on Illini to SC....had no idea SC didn't have room though....and didn't even know Louisville was in the mix at all....cheers

Defense is definitely more of a concern than rebounding. Finke improved his overall strength and rebounding tremendously last year. I remember him getting a ton of offensive rebounds last year.

Which part do you think is a slap at Finke? Needing a scoring wing or needing a big?

Because of our lack of bigs, Finke will play very little as a wing on offense.

Defensively neither Black nor Finke is ideal at the 5.

Injuries happen, Finke is coming off a foot injury, Black missed a season with his knee, so we could go from critically short on bigs, to Kipper playing 20 minutes a game at the 5 very easily, with AJ / Smith/ Damonte sharing duties as our 4.

He did improve, as most do their second year. But the rebounding numbers weren't what I'd call "tremendously" better. Still not a strength of his game.

Serious? Basically, they're both saying they don't know anything and are guessing like the rest.
Well, the two of them don't appear to:

1) Post in the form of symbols

2) Post in the form of acronyms

3) Speak in 100% absolutes

4) Get angry when people reasonably question them and/or their sources due to the fact they are anonymous message board posters

That alone makes them better than 100% of the people claiming to be insiders during the Groce era.
