2017 Basketball Transfer Thread

Tied in an average amount to the school up north of us.. They expect to "win anyways"... And that is with serious turnover at the guard positions this year. I gave the school away but I hope Underwood gets us to that point. I think we should just believe in Underwood. Not much else to say at this

He's not much of a defender or ball handler. With a coach that places a premium on both as well as an aggressive attitude he may have been the proverbial square peg even though he can shoot the lights out when he's open and in rhythm. It's quite possible he was told he'd have to make big improvements in his overall game if he wanted playing time next season and it didn't sit well.

JCL was much improved on defense this year. His ball handling is an issue. I can see why he might consider transferring if Alstork came aboard. Losing JCL & getting Alstork doesn't improve the team that much, IMO. Hope JCL stays!

Surprised no one's mentioned Heirman at DePaul. Would be obvious factor if JCL decides to transfer there

If any Kid wants to leave, you just say thanks for playing and good luck in your future. It might make this year a bit rougher, but we didn't hire BU for one year we hired him to turn the program around, and heck we were so worried about ships for 2018 looks like we will have a couple now LOL

That would be called tampering..... This would be one case where I would be just fine with a transfer block

at this rate, any player on scholarship and healthy will get decent playing time, IMO.

Honestly. If you don't want to participate in what this offense is going to become.....peace out. :illinois:

A-freakin'-men. We are in full rebuild mode, and I'm ready to embrace it. BW and JG both got a boost at the onset from the previous rosters before steadily declining. Maybe actually burning it down and letting BU build a program will work. Will it be easy or quick? Probably not. But after BW/JG, I'm willing to give this path a try.

Players probably got a sense of the program from some early practices and expectations. Those that want to buy in will stay. If not, good luck elsewhere.

It's not tampering unless Depaul has been contacting him and asking him to transfer. More likely is that JCL's highschool coach who he had a good relationship with just got a new job at a school that is also close to home and he is interested in playing for his old coach again rather than playing for a new coaching staff here that he does not know.

Who said anything about tampering. Maybe he's in satisfied with his situation here and wants to play for his former coach

We may be in rebuilding mode but rebuilding can be done in basketball much quicker than football. It really can take just one class to change the trajectory of a program. A few grad transfers and next year may not be that bad. Add in some 18 recruits and the program is on the way up.

Man wtf? There's a lot of minutes and a great opportunity here for JCL. This is a head scratcher.

Man, this isn't how I pictured things going down when Underwood was hired and the new coaching staff was put together. JCL leaving would be a HUGE blow. The kid can flat out shoot.

Missouri pulling in 5-star kids left and right with their new coach. Heck, even DePaul gets a 5-star kid with their new assistants and we can't keep the kids we have on our roster with our new coach and assistants.

The star recruit we did get (Mark Smith) was thanks to an assistant we already had.

Obviously, I need some good news, and soon. If it's indeed JCL who's leaving, that puts Illinois in a VERY bad spot for next year.....sure hope Underwood can do more with less, as good coaches seem to be able to do.

DePaul isn't getting a 5star, unless someone that is a 5 star commits, Ty wont be a 5star for 18.

Smith is huge but so are Trent and DaWill, for a change we have 4 guys who can bring the ball up and play the point spot if needed, we been lucky to have 1

I like JCL a lot but other then shoot what does he do , he falls down at least 3 times a game trying to dribble,

BU and staff will get players, and we will start winning and be able to watch exciting basketball again. Things always look darkest before the dawn

A HUGE blow??? Climb down off of the ledge IlliniinIowa! Mizzou has a head coach who can get talent but can't coach and DePaul has a head coach who has never had sustained success or recruited well anywhere that he has been. If it was instant gratification Josh Whitman was going for, he might have hired Cuonzo for the year or two bump that he brings to a program before it inevitably fails. If Coach Underwood was looking to bring in more of the La Lumiere talent for the short term he could have pushed to add Heirman as an assistant. Since neither of those things happened, you have to step back and give both Whitman and Underwood the benefit of the doubt that they know what they are doing based upon their track records to date. Does anyone on this Board seriously think that Mizzou or DePaul are better positioned at this point than the ILLINI for long term success? Not a chance!
WE WILL WIN!

Missouri has one five star recruit. So left & right might be an overstatement. Tilmon is now considered a 4 star & Harris is a four star who generally is rated lower than the guards we are bringing in.
I do agree JCL leaving would be a very serious blow to the Illini, but maybe we are overreacting to a "twitter" rumor.

Eh I would have taken Heirman over Chin. I think Heirman is likely a better all round coach/recruiter and will prove that given some time on the college stage. There was definitely some pressure to get a Chicago guy on staff which gives Coleman the advantage over a rising potential star coach. That being said Tyger is not why I think Heirman would be a good hire. Not a big proponent of hiring someone for a recruit or two. I just think Heirman will be a very good coach as he grows into the role. Maybe in 3-5 yrs you will see Orlando or Jamall move on and you can bring in a more seasoned Heirman. That would be ideal for UI.

I'm all in on this staff! Yes, I am anxious about what's going on with the recruiting side of things. But that is mostly because I'm finding it hard to separate this staff and how it does things, with the past 2 staffs. I need to do that and I'm working on it. This is an all new way of doing things for us, the likes of which we haven't seen since Self was here.

If we only have 9 or 10 scholarship players and have to run them into the ground to make this work, so be it. We might have to squeeze some minutes out of the walk-ons here and there, but other teams have done it for a year with some success. We need 100% buy in from the scholarship players we do have though, and they also need to be multi-dimensional. This is why we have had one transfer and perhaps will see one or two more.

Aaron Jordan has a great opportunity to step up and I think he's going to open some eyes this year.

I'm not so sure about that, see what happens, think he better step up, we didn't see much, summer camp will probably make or break him.

As far as Hierman v Chin , Chin wins by a mile. Hierman gets hand delivered top ranked players delivered to him, easy to win and look good . Chin is in touch with Chicago, lived there, and was in a college atmosphere at UIC, this about HS kids moving up, not staying at the house playing in their crib. :illinois:

Need players to run that offense though, and right now we're losing too many and not gaining enough....

Not one dimensional players that don't want to compete on defense as well as offense. The players BU wants will come, and they will not be one dimensional. :illinois:

Edit: I didn't intend to implicate JCL at all here. I hope it's all just stupid internet speculation and that he ends up staying and shooting lights out and honing his all around game.

That is an absurd statement... by your logic Cal is no big deal because UK has always gotten talent. Heirman took a good program and elevated it to a new level. LaLu wasn't competing for national championships before him. Yes they were a good prep school but they were not equivalent to Oak Hill or Montverde. Now they are. He did that with a combination of recruiting and coaching.

Sure he has no D1 experience but he has a much higher ceiling than Chin. I would argue that he may already be a better coach. But like I said before Chin has that Chicago tie and that really is the biggest reason for him being at UI right now.

I agree with everything that you have said about Heirman but for whatever reason Underwood chose not to pursue him for his staff at this time, even though if he had wanted him it appears he could have gotten him. I am intrigued about your idea about adding him in the future as an assistant as I also think he is an up and coming coach.

Nevertheless, for those of you on the Board suddenly concerned about DePaul, here is a reality check: DePaul has not had a winning season since 2007, has averaged less that 2200 in home attendance for over the last 5 years and is making the same mistake of moving into another "off-campus" arena far from campus with no good way to get there and with only 10,000 seats, which hardly qualifies as a major college draw for recruits. Hiring a high school coach who can bring a couple of recruits for the short term is not a long term solution to this mess.

Nobody will be able to match JCL's shooting ability and I'd be sad to see him go. That aside, anything JCL can do Frazier will do better.

Losing JCL would be a huge blow to this team. Anyone who doesn't think so needs to wake up. He is expected to be possibly our best returning player this year.
