Another intriguing mid major guy, Nicholas McDevitt at UNC-Asheville.
Meh. The Big South is low major. You head down to that level you want the resume to look like Brad Underwood's did.

No more "if we overwhelm the opponent with our talent, maybe we can overcome the mediocre coaching". I'm too scarred for more of that...
I'm very partial to going for top end coaching. After years of poor coaching, I hate the idea of "recruiting upside" over "excellent leadership and coaching". Ideally the candidate would be a strong recruiter too, but my strong preference is to watch excellent basketball on the court. Just to be clear, we do not currently have a mediocre coach. A mediocre coach would represent a significant upgrade.
Lorenzo Romar a prime example of keeping a lame-duck for the hopes of tomorrow. Somehow gets great talent, goes nowhere with it.
He has really fallen off these last handful of years. Was it really the talent of Nate Robinson/Brandon Roy/Spencer Hawes who made him better than what he actually is? I don't know how he continues to recruit all of these great talents and has little to show for it over the last 5-6 years. Isiah Thomas, Terrence Ross, Justin Holiday, Tony Wroten, CJ Wilcox, Marquesse Chris, and Dejounte Murray all in the NBA since 2011 and they all went through Romar's program for at least a year. Ultimate underachiever.
Now THAT is a great question. Any connection between the two? We need an ESL insider.Markelle Fultz is the best of the bunch and they're even worse if anything.
The obvious move is to fire Romar and find a way to keep Porter Sr. and thus Porter Jr. But if Mizzou would bring the whole gang home, that could be tough to do. Is it worth giving Romar one last ride with the #2 player in the class? Would Mizzou really hire a bad coach just to jolt their program back to life in the short term?
(Any chance a Cuonzo-Porter Sr marriage could happen in Champaign? Just askin')
So I want replies to this question. What does it take for JW to keep Groce is it NCAA or bust? I just have this feeling if he won 9 games and won a BTT game or two and went to the NIT he will keep Groce because of the recruiting class? Now if they go 7-11 or worse in the conference then JW fires him after the BTT or after any post-season tourney if they get invited to one? Thoughts?
Does the new coach need to be a minority in order to avoid a lengthy search process where the program is in limbo with no coach? Clearly, the expeditious nature in which Lovie replaced Cubit had its advantages.
Anything less than a sweet 16 does nothing for me. Winning one game in the tournament as a 12 seed or something doesn't mean anything to me.

If this team turned it around and made the tourney this year even if they lost in the 1st round no way Groce gets fired right? I'm not a Groce supporter but even he would deserve another year if he turns this around but I really don't see that happening especially if they lose tonight?
So you reward the guy for failing pretty much miserably through 2/3 of the season? I couldn't care less if his team bounces back and barely sneaks into the tourney. It shouldn't have struggled as mightily as it has in the first place. "Turns this around" shouldn't even be a thing with a veteran team like this.If this team turned it around and made the tourney this year even if they lost in the 1st round no way Groce gets fired right? Get used to hearing this: John Groce is finished as coach of the Fighting Illini. He's done.

Forget used to it, it's music to my ears! Quit settling for backing into the Tournament on a really down year for the B10! A year five coach with a veteran team should be showing so much more than that. And that's not going to happen anyway. It's time to be looking to the future.
So are you saying someone like McCaffrey at Iowa should be fired too in his 7th year as his team won't make the tourney either? I know Iowa had two good years before this year but this guy is 57-58 in conference and this guy keeps his job next year? He didn't have a winning record in the B1G until year 5 and he kept his job? Our basketball standards are significantly different than Iowa's.
