If JW doesn't, he himself will lose a chunk of the base. You can't say "We will Win" and then allow this to happen to your basketball program.

Whitman has enough clout after the Lovie hiring he should do whatever he thinks is best, period. This years team does not have the talent people think it does. We have 0 guys that will play in the NBA. When we have good teams we had guys on the roster that were NBA talents. The sad thing is Tilmon is an NBA talent and the guards are finally getting better with Lucas and Frazier and possibly Smith if it wasn't for the cloud over Groce . Good grief did we miss a lot of open shots last night.

You're not seriously advocating for keeping Groce, are you? And you're also not saying that this year's team doesn't have enough talent to make the NCAA Tournament, are you? Because that would be completely insane. I just want to make sure you're kidding; otherwise, WOW!

How many screen names do you have on this site?

Lots of talks on here about letting Groce go, and we've read that if we don't make the dance this year, he's gone. How do we know that? Has JW even hinted at it, or is it all conjecture from this board?
Nothing is ever 100% certain but I will say confidently that he won't be here next year if he misses the tournament. At this point Groce is making the decision pretty easy for JW. Whitman is smart and will always support Groce until the day he's fired.... something Mike Thomas failed to do Weber and Zook.

What if there are no good candidates? Why ditch the recruiting class for a below average replacement?

Groce's contract runs only two more years and he has a 500k bonus due in April. Fire him next month and save that $$ for the new coach. There is no way you can bring him back he would be a lame duck coach and the recruits know it just start over. JW needs to do his best to keep Tilmon and Frazier if they stay the other two guys will too. Hire someone that can actually motivate and coach defense and have a system unlike Groce who hasn't placed any identity on this program at all in 5 years!!

This recruiting class is NOT THAT GREAT! Please stop with this narrative. We have ONE TOP 100 player, and he's no sure thing. Groce is as good as gone. Let me repeat: he's gone. Get used to that. He will not be the Illini hoops coach next year. Sharpie that! It's done.

You'd have to be pretty far inside to know, but Whitman is smart so what do you think?

That's my point I trust what he wants to do,
I trust he has the very best of the program in mind and if he shocks us and keeps him he knows what he is doing.

He probably is but who cares about the rankings of top 100. Frazier is better than that .
The class is still tops in the league.

Bottom line - Groce has to go!
As far as getting new coach - please remember money talks. If there is enough money we can get a quality coach.

If NC St doesn't get him, my pick is Archie Miller. Whitman will get a good man!

I completely reject the implied, and quite circular argument here. Lack of wins = lack of talent. It completely absolves the coach of results. A lot of teams make the dance with zero NBA guys.

If your coach is bringing top-100 guys, and we have brought in a number of them, and they fail to win, you can't just chalk it up to players not having talent. We had the 16th ranked class in the nation in 2015, second in the conference!

Go look at the offer sheet of the following guys on 247sports and tell me we don't have talent:
Jalen Coleman Lands had every decent program in the conference, and dozens of others like Louisville, Arizona. Tons of coaches would love to have him.
DJW had offers from Kansas, Arizaona, MSU, Purdue....
Leron Black had offers from Louisville, Kansas, Baylor, UCLA...
AJ had Wiscy, Purdue, Indiana, Xavier....
Finke, Wiscy....
Hill was recruited by Weber, but we were worried about losing him, and was 70th in their rankings.

We don't have top guys up and down the roster or on the bench, but few programs do, and I can put our talent up against a lot of teams with better results and come out ahead.

For me, the eye test is pretty simple.

Williams is #91 on ESPN Top 100

I don't disagree with you other then Tilmon this class isn't that great but Williams is top 100 according to ESPN but not on Rivals top 150. Did Frazier fall this year I thought he was a top 100 recruit before?

Very subjective opinion there, cam. I'll trust all the talent evaluators and recruiting sites over your opinion, though. Frazier COULD be a good PG in the future, but he could also be yet another average player, especially if Coach Ladder is his coach.

I agree go all in an get Archie Miller he can turn this around in two years and may even sneak in next year if they keep Tilmon and Frazier. Other then Hill they aren't losing much Abrams has stunk and Mav is just a role player.

Kansas didn't offer either Black or DJW. Everything else is correct!

Frazier's national composite rank is 103. Damonte's is 106.

I think you are right I don't mean to criticize our players, my only point is we have lacked greatly at the most important position, the point guard. I also think Tilmon should help the defense because of his shot blocking potential. I think Groce is gone I guess I just hate to see an Illinois coach fail and hate to have to fire them, it was nice when Lou gave us 20 years of stability. The last 10 years have just felt like a non stop discussion of firing coaches.

That happens when your team sucks, and the AD refuses to do anything about it. Money talks. If Whitman has the cash, he'll land a star. Lock.
