Who are the "sure fire" candidates? I think the last of those we hired was Lon. Even he had difficulty with recruiting Chicago. There just happened to be a lot of talent outside the city at the time. Self was an up and comer, but not a sure thing.

The sure fire candidates are guys like Scott Drew, Gregg Marshall, Tony Bennett, Frank Martin, Buzz Williams, and Archie Miller.

I agree with your comments on Groce not developing players but Hill has improved since he started at Illinois. His average is about what is was last year and he is a top 5 player in the Big Ten.

Really? I think a lot of MH, but I don't believe he's top 5 in the league.

It would certainly be a funny little switcheroo. I would like the hire, because I like Martin.

Yeah I have nothing against Martin in general. It would just be such a weird situation. I still can't believe KState let him walk like that, but they also replaced him with Weber, which indicates a certain lack of judgement on their part.

I'm going to start keeping a list, and Kajagoogoo is off the Keatts Hype Train. Don't choke on the dust or steam cloud or whatever trains expel

I'd like to offer you some heartfelt applause for this post. It made me chuckle.

I don't view Frank Martin as a sure fire candidate, nor Archie/Gregg, and Buzz would depend on your floor for what you expect a sure fire candidate to produce. Tony Bennett/Sean Miller would be sure fires, after that you have questions.

Where did Sean Miller's name come from? He's not leaving Arizona.

The others that I named are sure-fire candidates to be successful coaches and recruiters. They've all had success at their stops. I'm not sure what you are expecting but Brad Stevens isn't coming through that door and neither is Bill Self. Temper your expectations a bit. All coaches that I have named are quality candidates who would have success. I have no doubts about that.

Over at goemaw, they have no love for Currie.

Whitman inquired about Sean Miller last year; at least, a source I know said as much. TIFWIW.

I'm confused why Bennett and Sean Miller's names are being thrown around for our next coach? I find it hard to believe they can view Illinois as an upgrade to the teams they are coaching now. Can someone fill me in on how either of these two are a possibility? Obviously I would love to see either one of these two take over this program next year.

What would the equivalent of a Lovie hire (instant PR or turning the corner and screaming that we're serious about this) be for the basketball team? Sean Miller probably, but as others have said, is VERY unlikely to ever happen. I know basketball isn't football, but I'm interested in who would be a similar type hire.

No, you're off the Keatts Hype Train. Feel free to start a hype train for Dan Muller or some other joke of a candidate, but just know this train doesn't stop till Illinois is 2017-2018 Big Ten Champs and Keatts is cutting down the nets.

I'd like to offer you some heartfelt applause for this post. It made me chuckle.

sacraig, welcome to the Keatts Hype Train. Feel free to join me in scouring the net trying to find ways to stream UNCW's remaining games.

I'd probably agree that Sean Miller is unlikely (I've also heard Carolina is seriously interested when Ol' Roy retires), but I passed along my source's info to another source with ties to the Illini media group. They did some digging around and were surprised to hear the info is correct and Miller *might* have interest as well. Still unlikely, yes. But not a 100% farce from what I've heard.

:tsk::mad::confused::(:eek:

I guess I'm all-in on Sean Miller or Tony Bennett unless Gregg Popovich shows interest ... or maybe DOC RIVERS! There we go!

As President of the United States, don't you have something better to do?

I don't know if your sources are just made up, but if there really IS a chance for Sean Miller, I'm on whatever plane, train, or automobile that is.

I should also be clear that I'm no insider at all. I just happened to stumble upon someone that gave me info about Sean M. I passed that info onto a Chicago sportswriter I'm familiar with. He was skeptical himself, so he talked to this member of the Illini media group (also skeptical). The media group guy asked around and found out the interest is legit (both ways).

I'd still say it's highly unlikely anything comes of it. At the least, I think it shows that Whitman is shooting for the stars with this hire.

Over at goemaw, they have no love for Currie.

Shortly after Weber signed there, I had a morbid curiosity to go over and lurk. I kept it up off and on maybe once or twice per season for a few years and was always entertained with how much they didn't like Weber from the outset.

I loved their reaction to "Jack Krap". The gifs they made when he signed to play with them...

If we're talking about sure-fire coaches to be successful, Bennett and Sean Miller fit those bills. Frank Martin, etc. can be solid candidates without being sure-fire just because they are a top candidate on our board. Pretty simple. My expectations are VERY tempered as a firm rider of the Keatts and Archie hype trains. In my mind, those are my top, realistic candidates. Feel free to read my post history on this thread. I also encourage you to read other posts in the thread, Sean Miller's name had come up within 20 posts of your comment asking where that came from, so...

Oh I don't know if I belong on any hype train. I am just standing here at the station waiting to hop onto whichever end up arriving at the station in March/April.

My apologies. I just couldn't resist. Oh, the irony. :tsk:

While I chuckled, it isn't really a fair comparison. Kansas is a blue blood. South Carolina isn't. Weber had no prior experience failing at the high D1 level when we hired him. He obviously did when K-State took him.
