Before the conference play started, I posted the 14 teams' KenPom rankings at various times in the year. Now that January has come and gone, I've added another column.
Two guys looking good, Collins and Pitino. Two guys looking bad; Matta and Izzo. The rest don't show enough movement in my opinion to merit a comment

2016 Big Ten Men's Basketball
History of Pomeroy Rankings

Before any Games / Before Confer Play / End of January
Wisconsin 8 10 11
Ohio St. 13 41 63
Mich St. 14 53 55
Indiana 16 15 36
Purdue 18 12 12
Michigan 31 29 33
Maryland 48 64 37
Iowa 55 68 91
Nrthwstrn 61 46 30
Illinois 70 66 67
Minnesota 71 47 39
Nebraska 85 97 93
Penn St. 97 96 94
Rutgers 191 115 129

Very nice, thanks for sharing. You have to add Iowa to the "looking bad" category. That's a solid drop.

Well, I'm finally ready to get in on this coaching search action. Looks like I was 160 pages too late.

Does the upcoming Memorial Stadium renovation hurt Whitman's ability to throw cash at a big name? Or is their plenty of cash to go around?

Also, this is really my second coaching change that I actually plan on following closely (Lovie being the first). So my question is what are the odds that a name discussed on this board actually gets hired? Lovie came out of nowhere obviously. Were Beckman and Groce talked about prior to being hired, or did they also come out of left field? What about Zook, Weber, or Self?

The Memorial renovation won't impact our ability to shell out cash for a coach. If it was that tight on cash (we're talking about a small buyout and a small relative to costs of renovation salary for new coach), then the renovation wouldn't move forward.

On the latter point, we've cast a pretty wide net, so seems fairly likely we're at least close.

I want Miller. I'll be disappointing with anyone else (unless there is a crazy shocker). Unfortunately I'm used to being disappointed by Illinois Basketball over the last 10 years

I'm interested in how he gets those studs to Waco. There is literally nothing there. It is noted as being the halfway point between Austin and Dallas more than it is noted for being Waco. It doesn't even have the college town feel to it like CU. That said, I've heard some things about his tactical abilities that would give some pause considering what we're dealing with now.

This is the fanbase where many people believe that Bill Self needs to cheat to get players to Kansas, and yet you're not sure how a slack-jawed dimwit can recruit such highly ranked players to Baylor?

I'll be disgusted if we hire Scott Drew.

The proverbial "vote of confidence" from Trent....not good.

If it comes to firing Groce or keeping Trent Frazier - bye Trent. I wouldn't even bat an eye at the kid wanting to transfer out.

I would. Young man's a baller, and he appears to have fallen in love with the school. I was rather looking forward to a potentially Dee-esque student athlete ambassador for the school.

But your sentiment - that we shouldn't retain a bad coach for the sake of a recruit - is sound. And even then, there's no guarantee that Frazier bolts once Groce is shown the door.

I am not one to get involved in discussing firings, unless it's a Baylor-esque situation. But, I just starting to type Cuonzo Martin into the old google machine and one of the suggested searches that came up was Cuonzo Martin to Illinois. It goes to old rumors from2012 search. But it updates based on recent searches.

In no way am I saying this is the right move or what would be. Just an interesting find.

I do hope this team keeps playing hard and Whitman makes the right decision.

Go Illini

I like going the Archie Miller route unless we can get a bigger name guy. Wouldn't be surprised if JW went after an ex-NBA guy, or a charismatic assistant from the NBA. I think with a good enough offer, we could totally land Archie... money talks. I trust JW, and he is definitely doing his due diligence at the moment and getting a solid list together. The day we are out of the BTT is the day Groce is let go. Can't wait to get there!

Flipping the script a little bit. Any guesses on where Groce ends up if/when Josh gives him the heave-ho?

Probably a top assistant role with Thad Matta or another job in a mid major conference(maybe a Missouri Valley/MAC/C-USA/Horizon League type of job). I don't think he gets another shot at a Power 5 school, no shot in the A-10 or AAC.

It ultimately depends on what he wants to do.

Travis Ford's personal assistant. Groce is going to make his lunch every day so he stops eating his.

1 name I'd make a run at is Mike Brey. Throw about 2.5 million at him and see if he bites.

I have met Mike Brey quite a few times and there is no way he leaves ND for Illinois. Actually, I'd be surprised if he does leave ND for any other school not named Duke, but I am not sure he would even leave for Duke.

I really want to keep Frazier! Just off of a two minute tape you can see the great quickness we simply don't have. I like Lucas and Nichols and if this class stays together we will be good in a hurry. The great thing about this class is a good point guard, a good big, talent at the right positions. I can't wait for the day when we have a guy or 2 that can't be stopped and he can just make a play and get a bucket .

Don't forget to say you can't wait for these seniors to leave. That has been the narrative for about 10 years now. The seniors are the problem, so and so bench player would make us better and just wait for our underrated NBA ready recruits.

We get your point, but it is clear that certain seniors on this team simply aren't having a mediocre senior year. They're having an awful one, and it is killing Groce.

Clearly, Mav and Malcolm are playing well overall. Malcolm is struggling lately, but no one is saying we won't miss him (or Mav).

I feel awful for Abrams and Thorne for the injuries and their impact on each guy's effectiveness. It isn't fun to watch game after game where some of our seniors are unable to positively impact the game... It's torture. But it's also our reality.
