I was chit-chatting Illini hoops with a couple folks and they seemed pretty adamant that Groce might not have a head coaching gig after getting the boot. I still think he'll end up coaching in a low-major conference after this year, no?

Just hope it's not as an assistant at Ohio State....

I think he needs to get his reputation back as an assistant. If he wants another shot at this he needs to take a step back and see what works for a successful coach, not just jump right into another head gig.

Time for Change

Gottfried was fired today. Since being hired in 2011, he went to the NCAA tournament 4 times including 2 trips to the Sweet 16.

Yet, we have those on this board thinking we should keep Groce to: preserve a solid (not spectacular) recruiting class and for fear that "we won't find anybody good that wants the job."

If we have so little confidence in our AD that he can't find a significantly better option than Groce, than we have a much bigger problem than just our basketball coach.

I believe JW will do his homework.....and whether the new coach is a "big name", a retread or an up and coming assistant, we will be in a much better place than we are right now.

I think the main thing to consider is who is doing the hiring.......it was Thomas, now it's JW, and I think that will make a significant difference in who the Illini have a shot at for the new coach.:chief:

Archie's not going to happen there based on what I've been reading, so they are a serious risk for nabbing Keatts.

Something I heard this morning... Matta knows his time is running out and with his health is thinking about retiring. Matta wants Archie to be his successor.

Can you link or explain why Archie isn't going there? From the outside it seems like a no brainer.

It's not that hard to believe, really. Alma mater is the only thing tying him to that job right now. If that part doesn't matter to him, why would he go to NC State?

(Please note that I do not anticipate him coming here, either.)

NC St fans on message boards/reddit, Goodman (as I referenced earlier) and other basketball writers are sharing the sentiment that it's a long shot or not happening for Archie to go to NC St

Alma mater means a lot to me so it's just a different mind set than I have. That's aD is awful though.

All things considered, he said. Illinois basketball redefined itself with Lou Henson; 1989 showed what this program could be with the right recruits and right leadership, and that should have been our vision going forward. The sanctions were a hiccup, and what did we do after the inevitable down years?? Rebounded with our 1998-2006 stretch. It's really as simple as that. The non-sanction years of 1980-2007 should be our expectations, because we proved (over a VERY long stretch with FOUR different coaches who all won a Big Ten title) that it can be done here beyond a shadow of a doubt. Weber tailed off, and we needed to replace him, and it just so happened that we (read: Mike Thomas) made a very costly mistake in that replacement. If we are going to right the ship, everyone needs to transport themselves back to 2008-level thinking and pretend we were firing Weber after that season. Who would we want? Who would we believe we could get? I'm optimistic that the leadership in place now believes in this program's potential and believes that we can return to what HAD become the new baseline in the modern era of college hoops for Illinois basketball.

Apparently, sir, you never heard of Harv Schmidt.

Fighter of Nightman is right, I was saying it in light of all we had accomplished since the 80s (with some down season thrown in for sure, but largely successful). You are also (kinda) right, as I'm not really familiar with Harv Schmidt and his history. I was born in the midst of the Henson era.

Sorry but Groce is absolutely going back to tOSU as an assistant. The decline was gradual after Groce left, but they have tanked big time since he and Boals left to take head coaching gigs. tOSU would be insane to not make Groce an offer to be the highest paid assistant in the country.

And now the speculation can really get going about who will move with Gottfried officially out . . .

I get that too. The opportunity to try and go succeed at my alma mater would mean the world to me. To him it might not.

Not everyone feels the same away about their alma maters. How many people do you know that cheer on the Illini but went to another school? If Archie grew up in North Carolina and was a NC State fan growing up then yes it would be a no brainer. Rick George could've returned to be the AD at his alma mater a year ago. Each situation is different.

Jeff Boals at Stony Brook is going to be Matta's successor at Ohio State. He was the other big time recruiter during their big run along with Groce.

Boals is a clown. No way he gets the Ohio State job.

Groce was at Ohio State from 2004-2008
Boals 2009-2016

I agree Groce will be back at Ohio State if Matta or Archie are there next season. All of this assuming he doesn't get another head coaching gig at a small school.
