Yeah, he went to Duke. There will always be top level talent who would like to leave the state to go play for Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky etc. Especially in periods when Illinois is very mediocre. Jabari Parker is a bad example. It is not that he wanted out of Illinois to just go and play in a bad program just to get out. He went to Duke.

This is the only reason I used Jabari as an example.

"Because by that point, I did not want to stay in Chicago, I did not want to see one Illinois license plate. I was so used to my neighborhood, my environment. I had gotten sick of it all" http://www.theplayerstribune.com/jabari-parker-chicago-gun-violence/

I imagine if he weren't a Duke level talent, he would have gone somewhere else. When you grow up in a bad spot - all you want to do is get as far away from it as you can.

Williams and Grant

Jackson would not fit well in college, imo.

Bennett's offense would drive Illini fans crazy unless he won big. It is slow and boring to watch.

Rumors of Grant coming as the top assistant to Monty Williams. Just rumor, though.

Not sure I buy the Monty Williams thing...the NBA exec thing is working pretty good for him. I think his sights may be on NBA gig once again...

Grant I think would be a great fit, probably doesn't think NBA is coming anytime soon (limited options for hire), plus would recruit well I think...

Anthony Grant is most realistic imo, Gregg Marshall could be had as well I think.

I guess I just don't understand your position of holding Groce another year if you can't get a homerun. So what happens after next year? Do you think the same people that turned you down the previous year will change their mind? Do you think those coaches may have down years and want out? (at which point they probably wouldn't be considered homeruns anymore) I just don't understand the logic.

It's not a position....I want him gone....I'm saying that there is a path or reason for Whitman to do it. New coaches come open every year. New things happen, there is a different crop of available names every year.

The major thing I've come to terms with is even if you don't love the candidates at the top necessarily, this is the friendliest to us group of peers on the carousel this year we'll see for a while (unless OSU and IU open). That is a factor that can't be overstated -- the carousel is not deep (at least, considering jobs we know/are highly likely to be open) and the other top gigs are not really competitors for similar coaches. We are at or near the top of the pecking order.

That is probably correct, at least so far. I would hope Whitman would make it more attractive as well, the reverse of what Mike Thomas did for us.

Homer would be Bennett, Donavon.... And I don't think you have to extend. The junior class has 0 players on scholarship, unless there are transfers, you won't have to do a lot of recruiting and it would buy you time to make the decision after next year. Especially considering you would have 1. Frazier FR, 2. Lucas SO, 3. JCL JR, 4. Black JR and 5. Tillmon FR. Thats potentially same lineup two years in a row.

And your bench would be what? Right now we have 13 scholarship players. Six are seniors, leaving a max of seven for next year. There is a fair chance that DJW is gone, and it is possible we lose AJ as well. Even if both stay, neither brings much experience to the court.

But if we lose both, and if we lose one of four committed recruits, that leaves us with a total of eight players, including three frosh and one soph.

Huh? Finke, Jordan, DJW, Damonte and Pickett off bench. Maybe 5th year transfer in front court.... All I was saying is that there is a way to keep Groce, without extending and not be killed in recruiting...

I know that everyone is saying that you have to extend a coach past 2 years if he is going to stay because it will affect 2018 recruiting. How many scholly's open up in 2018 and what will be our needs? Seems to me that this is kind of a non factor in this decision.

Possibility, yes... Also possible to get 5th year players to transfer in to fill those spots. Lots of possibilities.

Sounds like you just want to keep on keepin' on since this strategy has worked so well?

We have enough class balance issues as-is. Choosing to effectively skip the 2018 class is really not a great idea, in my opinion, and choosing to retain Groce without an extension is effectively doing just that.

I disagree, but we're beating a dead horse. I have a question for you...What about Kevin Ollie? Think he would be interested?

Nobody yet. That's the point. Groce would have to try to recruit without any job security.

He doesn't necessarily not have it. He is under contract for two more years after this year. That takes him through the 18-19 season. Not a lot of scholies to give, and if he has a decent year next year, gets his extension. With so many coming on board next year, and a good chunk back, the roster will be pretty full.

Sadly that's not how major college basketball works. You have to constantly be recruiting. And having a 2 year contract basically means you're a dead man walking.

I'm done arguing the point. My main point, and last post on this topic is this.

1. I want Groce gone
2. I'm not sure there are great hires out there we can get
3. Groce has enough coming in, and class imbalance that keeping him for one more year wouldn't kill recruiting.

I could see him leaving in a Tubby Smith type move. Get out before your seats burning hot. I could also see him leaving because of how mediocre the AAC is. I don't think he's that great of a coach though, definitely not a "homerun."

Not a homerun. Neither is Cuonzo to me though. They are basically one in the same to me, only thing is Cuonzo is from ESL.

Hmmm. Did anyone see Lovie Smith coming? I mean, anyone at all?

I somehow expect to see JW pull a tiger out of his had that no one here knew was available/would come.

That's probably too much faith in JW (see Orange and Blue Koolaid to your left), but I just get this sneaky feeling of none-of-the-above. :D

I simply cannot agree with this take. There is way too much pessimism around what this program can hire. If Whitman can hire freaking Lovie Smith for our football program... FOOTBALL... we should be able to get the types of guys we've been discussing.

And in addition... under this scenario... what if there are NO home run hires next year AND we have a terrible class coming in....

Recruiting... even in basketball... offers are made to sophomores and juniors ALL the time... hmmm I would offer you a scholarship but I don't have a contract for then but if I do, I would love for you to join me... don't think that would work.
