Where do you people come up with these ideas?

Vic Koenning
Jerrance Howard
Bill Cubit
Jamal Walker

I'm pretty sure I've read people wanting to fire the head coach and sign all of them to 2-4 year contracts as head coach when they were assistants here.

Bless their little hearts

This is why message board posters aren't AD's at Power 5 educational institutions. (okay, one of many reasons :p)

I wasn't aware that Shad's relationship with the athletic dept had soured. What happened?

Just for clarification, that is not what my post said. The relationship has not soured, but there have been some up-and-down times. I am not at liberty to discuss this and would not be the right subject in a UI sports forum. Khan has made several contributions to UI, not only AD, the university as a whole. But he is not the person to open the wallet whenever or for whatever.

Gives you an idea of how poor our coaching hires have been recently until Lovie

The relationship of Khan with UI athletic department has not been all peaches and cream. But besides that, there is common misconception that we have all of a sudden become the biggest spenders in the NCAA and money is absolutely no object. That is not the case, we will pay fair market value for a good coach, but not "whatever" it takes.

I've seen him at a couple basketball games this year.

How would Martin do as far as recruiting in Chicago?

Well, he just landed Charlie Moore from Chicago. Moore was a Mac Irvin kid too. So he already has some relationships in the city.

Cuonzo got beat in the first round by Hawaii with Jaylen Brown and Rabb.

Ya gotta get to the NCAA Tournament to get beat there.

And Calimari doesn't win the Tournament every year even though his roster is filled with future NBA players...what's your point?

The NCAA tournament is so fun to watch because the best team doesn't always win, and it seems that there is always a Cinderellas crashing the ball!

I don't see Illinois being able to attract an established coach with an impeccable record like Bennett, Gregg Marshall, or Miller. If Whitman can do it, great. More likely he would have to go after someone like Cuonzo Martin, Frank Martin, Buzz Williams, or Ben Howland. I assume Drew is not likely because he's only been at Vanderbilt one year.

Cuonzo Martin would be a solid choice. He has connections in St. Louis and he's proven he can recruit in the toughest places to recruit in Chicago, i.e. Morgan Park. He's recruited 5 stars in Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb.

His coaching record is solid. His team's conference records improved at each school while he was there.
Missouri St. (3-15), (8-10), (15-3)
Tennessee (10-6), (11-7), (11-7)
California (7-11), (12-6)

These are the important things to look for, IMO.

1. Hawaii was really, really good last year.

2. Cal lost their leading scorer to a broken hand in the week leading up to the game.

3. Jabari Bird, another starter, didn't play due to back spasms.

So they were down 2 starters and lost to a good team. Man, he sucks.

Don't forgot one important fact. He was IN THE TOURNAMENT. At this point, I WISH we'd get upset in the first round. At least we were there.

Not saying he would be good or bad, but it's kind of funny everyone wants another coach from the Keady coaching tree!

We saw who Josh hired for football, I think he could get a higher level coach, maybe not.

To me, Gregg Marshall would be a grand slam hire but Cuonzo would still be a 2-run homer.
