Peanuts. Not going to be a deterrent at all.

Yeah, 1 Million is not going to be a hurdle. If we aren't willing to pony up enough to help with a 1 million buyout then we are going to be getting someone cheap.

Unless there is a total collapse (team quits) I think he has one more year. Recruiting has improved but coaching the fundamentals isn't there.

I'm not even sure we can say "recruiting has improved". He finally got a 5-star player, but other than Tilmon, over the past three recruiting classes, he hasn't done any better than Weber, who we all criticized. If a team were to shoot 30% for three games in a row, and then suddenly shoot 50% for one game, we wouldn't say "Oh, good, our shooting has improved." He hasn't shown that he can recruit well enough, at least, to offset his coaching. Which I think was also your point.

Lol. Thank you for clearing that up. I was referring to who pays a coach's buyout. The NCAA has enough goofy rules. It wouldn't have shocked me if they had something against boosters paying a coach's buyout.

Schools pay their salary and any buyouts/bonuses/etc. Where do schools get that money? TV contracts, merchandise sales, concessions, parking and .... donations from boosters. There's no need to be sneaky about it.

Agreed. We have 5 top 100 recruits on this year's team. We lose 2, add 1. It's respectable recruiting, but with the lacking of X/O capabilities, he needs to do better to succeed.

What about Assistant Coaches who are top recruiters or NBA assistants?

Adrian Griffin would be a nice candidate. He has worked under Scott Skiles, Thibs, and now Billy Donovan. Jimmy Butler has credited Griffin with playing a big role in his development as a player. His name often comes up in NBA head coach searches.

Not just the son's recruitment but there was that whole thing with the masseuse that he was stalking or sexually harassing or whatever.

I think you're mistaking him with Patrick Ewing...

EDIT: Aaah, too slow, of course.

In the 23 seasons before Groce arrived, the #Illini lost five games by 25+ points. In the last 48 games they have lost seven by 25+.

To be fair, five of those seven losses were by a team badly depleted by injuries. Then again, the other two 25+ losses were less than five weeks apart and were committed by what we all thought was an extremely mature and at least decently talented team.

I heard from someone in the know that not only are back channels a real thing, that they have already occurred early this December with Cuonzo Martin who reciprocated interest. I don't expect much of a search. He's going to get the job barring a wildcard throwing his name in.

Didn't want to say anything earlier because I wasn't sure of the credibility, and I'm still not sure, but I have a buddy who is faculty at Cal who says there are rumblings about Cuonzo aiming to get the Illinois job.

I certainly hope we are still an upgrade over Cal, despite our woes the past several years. We are, historically, a big time program, not blue blood, but only the next level under that.

Hope they're evidence based. Could be an excellent match. We could certainly do worse. A lot worse.

BOT's would be happy with Martin. We probably would be one of the few D1 schools that would have both major revenue sports headed up by AA's.

We are. That Cal job sucks.

The relationship of Khan with UI athletic department has not been all peaches and cream. But besides that, there is common misconception that we have all of a sudden become the biggest spenders in the NCAA and money is absolutely no object. That is not the case, we will pay fair market value for a good coach, but not "whatever" it takes.

I wasn't aware that Shad's relationship with the athletic dept had soured. What happened?

Rumors from what feels like 5+ years back. I'm sure Whitman can handle it. He seems to be pushing all the right buttons.

Also, this needs to be quoted on every page to keep people from jumping off a cliff. Keep hope alive in the face of another lost season. :thumb:

I would be more than okay with Cuonzo if this season doesn't work out. I have a feeling he would just kill it on the recruiting trail, and he can coach better than Groce, too.

what would the possibility be of Whitman firing Groce after a couple more of these embarrassing losses and letting Walker take the reigns as interim, if team performance and competitiveness is markedly improved, maybe sign to 2-3 year deal! Could be diamond in the rough!

If he was that good of a coach wouldn't we be seeing some of that already?

So Walker=Cubit and then next spring he hires Billy Donovan?

I would definetly be down with that!

Where do you people come up with these ideas?

Jerrance Howard
Bill Cubit

I'm pretty sure I've read people wanting to fire the head coach and sign all of them to 2-4 year contracts as head coach when they were assistants here.
