His college rèsumè is a bit shorter and lacks that miracle elite eight run, but his rèsumè is reminiscent of Bill Self's IMO. Lots and lots of winning, and a steady upward trend.

Self at Oral Roberts, not Tulsa. Not saying he is a bad choice, just it is a big jump.

Fun fact - In Anthony Grant's only 3 years at VCU in the CAA he finished first ALL three years.

True - and I actually thought Anthony Grant was a good hire at Alabama. Obviously didn't work out that great. But Grant also took over a team that went 19-13 (13-5 in conference) and 19-10 (11-7 in conference) the previous 2 years at VCU. Keatts took over a team that was 9-23 (3-13 in conference).

Grant WAS a good hire. A great one, really. Great hires do not always work out.

The word "unicorn" is being thrown derisively in the direction of the people who simultaneously say they want to be fist-pumpingly shocked with a Lovie-esque, outside-the-box home run, but then also demand that person will bring

-recruiting chops (but not the kind that raises eyebrows!)
-an exciting style of play (but not TOO crazy! has to work in the B1G amirite?)
-great Xs and Os (but not in, like, the Weber way!)
-a clear signal to the world that we're big time again (but not so big that he may some day leave!)

Oh and you also need to keep our recruiting class.

Great summary! Hopefully the people unexcited about names like Kevin Keatts and Monty Williams will gain a little perspective from this post. I swear, there's a contingent going, "if it's not Billy Donovan or Sean Miller, I'm not impressed!"

Outside of the E8, what Keatts has done is more impressive than what Self did at both Oral Roberts and Tulsa. Tulsa was coming off an NCAA appearance when they hired Self. In a lot of ways, he just maintained their success.

Oral Roberts was a dumpster fire when Self took over, but it took him until year 3 to do what Keatts did in year 1 at UNCW.

I'm not saying that Keatts is going to be Self, but what he's done at UNCW is really, really impressive.

I'm on the Monty train.

Is the consensus that we will not hear a final word on Groce until Monday? I'm confused as to why we would not have that decision this afternoon.

Who knows, but I think the most likely outcome is that Groce coaches us in whatever postseason tournament we're invited to, which is what dead man walking coaches at major schools have generally done in the past.

I'm with you actually. I was disappointed in the Groce hire for resume limitations that Keatts has blown out of the water. I love his resume. I think he's very likely to succeed. But, I'd love to have seen him do it for a couple more years.

Not that it matters, but Groce had a huge red flag IMO when he was hired (conference record). To me, that says a lot about how you're doing against schools with similar resources. Granted, a conference can have outliers, but I think the point about how you're doing relative to your competition holds.

I'm being told that a couple of boosters have approached Whitman about making changes at head coach but Whitman really wants to give Groce one more year.

Saw this coming from 1,000,000 miles away. And this is from the guy who fired our recently extended football coach his first day on the job. I don't know why Whitman feels any loyalty to Groce, but come on man. 5 years is more than enough of a chance.

I will refuse to believe this until we are specifically told that Groce is retained. And even then, I may refuse to believe this.

Actually the word unicorn was thrown around specifically for Keatts.

Whitman is the last person on earth I'd want to be right now.

It's very plausible to think that Whitman tentatively got his ducks in a row to prepare for a coaching search in mid-February, saw exactly what he was looking for from Groce during the 4-game winning streak, crescendoing with the sold-out (a big - and surprising - deal) MSU game to vault us into great NCAA tournament position, resolved to keep Groce in his own mind, and now has had his plans totally fall apart in a week.

That's why he makes the big bucks, but man, it's tough.

I think the silence of the last 18 hours is pretty deafening though, in terms of what it indicates about the decision.

Anyone else willing to justify the credentials for any candidate, just so that a change is made? Every time I see a new name, or argument for one of the forum favorites, I am ready to board that train. I must be really beaten down. I am normally more critical than this.
