BOOM! Feed my ego.
If the choice was Gregggg or Groce, sure, I'd take Gregggg. I just don't view him as the be-all, end-all, Very Best Option On The Market like so many people seem to...

Fair enough. I can respect your reasoning. I see Gregg as a very high floor, potentially extremely high ceiling guy. Of the guys being bandied about, he is the safest bet to get UI back to national relevance quickly, IMO.

Thanks for the full explanation. :thumb:

Ritster,

You must be a youngster who doesn't remember the good old days. Laying a 112 points on UCLA in basketball, upsetting the #1 team in football 3 consecutive homecomings, including Wisc on the last play of the game. Bring back Doug Mills.

Unfortunately that was so long ago I'm starting to forget

People, there really was a time when we kicked !!!

This is the great divide that appears on this board. Older Illini fans know what this program was and could be again with the right choices (hopefully even better than before). Younger fans have no direct knowledge of this and have lower expectations. This is a major fork in the road that Illini basketball will live with for years. Which track is it gonna be? Baylor, Oregon, Kansas? Or DePaul post-Aguirre and Cummings? Or just mid-level mediocrity purgatory?

But I get it. I think those are legitimate concerns or questions, but ultimately his track record indicates he is one of the elite basketball coaches in the world. I think he'd get it figured out one way or another. I just can't imagine anyone not being thrilled with Gregg Marshall taking over for John Groce. It blows my mind.

Gregg Marshall would be a very good coach for us. His resume is one of the best of any of the candidates. But remember, Alabama offered him a mint a couple years ago & he stayed at Wichita State (of course he got a raise, but he could have gotten more if he went to Bama.)

Yeah, and I don't expect him to be the next coach at Illinois. I think he ends up at Indiana.

But I also remember scoffing when I first heard the Lovie Smith rumor, so my instinct on potential UI coaches is not to be taken seriously.

Great news of TF. Most vital recruit and likely most vital player next year.

No doubt that Trent is a vital recruit. But Tilmon is the most vital player in this class hands down. Very highly sought after local recruit from the state of illinois. JT also has nba potential which would be a great selling point for future recruits if he did get drafted.

Me too. And if it turns out he's great, that just shows you that the world is a mysterious place.

John Groce could return, instantly turn it around, and be the next John Wooden. We could hire Tony Bennett and end up in the Big Ten cellar. There are no guarantees.

I'd take my chances with Bennett.

He's a good recruiting win. NBA talent. Still would rather keep TF over him in a heartbeat.

Regardless of which recruit you might think is more important going forward, Trent's words make it even more clear to me that this program is bigger than the coach. This decision is about the direction of the program and one of our incoming recruits just said so.

It's time to win again. :illinois:

Now that is a unicorn resume. His conference record is remarkable.

I am having trouble thinking of all the assistants that might be possibilities:

Names I recall being mentioned:
Jerrance Howard
Jon Scheyer (still not sure if that was real)
Dane Fife?

I'm sure I'm missing some but I'm surprised there aren't more on this list.

It's clear that most people on this blog agree with you. But I have yet to see a single good reason why people think this is so. If lowered expectations is all a person has, then that is all they'll get. Some of us want more. I guess this means we're fans of the wrong team?

Keep up the good fight! You sir/madam are inspirational.

I truely feel we have a shot at Steve Lavin. He's ready to get back into coaching - champaign calling!

Mentioned doesn't mean realistic. None of them are getting this job. Even if Illinois we're going to hire an assistant from somewhere it wouldn't be any of those guys and they wouldn't even get considered really. It would likely be a curren assistant with previous head coach experience. Like a Capel, Pelphrey, Steve Robinson, Darrin Horn kind of situation. Not those guys necessarily but someone similar with prior experience.

No. Out of coaching and two failed attempts at St Johns and UCLA. Winning a few recruiting battles and having a recognizable name doesn't make a good hire.

I don't know that I disagree but I don't know how you can be so definitive. I still complain that Mike Thomas didn't call Chris Collins.

No college assistants will be on the list.

There are a few I might be ok with and who would do ok. I actually think Norm Roberts is ready for another shot somewhere. He didn't have much a chance at St. John's and he is highly thought of in the sport. Capel would be ok. Not many assistants but there are a few that wouldn't be bad. Not sure when we hire a coach that I want my reaction to be "well, I guess he isn't bad" though. I wonder if Danny Manning would be interested in leaving Wake.

Instead of comparing Keatts career progression to Bo Ryan's, why not just hire the Grinch himself? I bet he's ready to coach again.

Plug in a young quality coach in training (roger Powell?), let Bo bring his mistress, and enjoy the smug genius he proclaims to be. All the while, Roger, Jerrence, Steven Bardo, et al, can learn on the job from a great coach/arrogant SOB!

Yeah, the Rev and Bo Ryan, there's a tight fit.
