Well, with the Bulls losing by 30, Hoiberg is just digging himself a deeper hole. With that being said, I don't think he would be the right candidate for the Illini. I don't like his coaching style and I don't think it would translate very well(although he had success at Iowa St.). I am souring day-by-day on Hoiberg.

I share many of your concerns, but what's happening with this open-faced poop sandwich of a roster that seems painstakingly designed to be the opposite of what Hoiberg's system would demand is not lowering my opinion of him one iota.

The Bulls are a joke of an organization. Hoiberg's only discredit is that he was enough of a fool to sign a contract with them. He'll be a free-agent rich fool soon enough.

Which is why that sentence ends with "from an analytical perspective" - I think we all realize that tournament wins are attention-grabbers.

They are important from an analytical perspective as well. You are mostly playing good teams in neutral environments who you don't see often. Says a lot about what a coach can do in game prep and mid game adjustments.

Hoiberg also played the transfer game early and often. As we know, it is often hit and miss. He got lucky w/some of the transfers he found(Royce White, Chris Babb), but overall, that's a dangerous game to play. I'm not sold that he could recruit.

Did he get lucky or does he just know what the hell he's doing?

Of course, it is not that in the tournament you win by rolling the dice. Furthermore, even from an analytical perspective, there is little evidence to suggest that a lower level conference coach with no NCAA tournaments or much success in the NCAA will do really well at Illinois or similar B1G job. In any case, Muller, Jankovich, etc. will not make the list, not what Illinois needs and I doubt JW and administration go that route.

I sure hope not. Those are uninspiring to say the least

Hey all, following up on my previous post HERE:

There was at least one request for a fuller data set with previous years of KenPom. I went ahead and compiled a spreadsheet with the Overall, AdjO, AdjD, and Tempo #s as well as 247 Recruiting Class Rank for every target included in that post for their entire tenure at their current school, + the year prior to their arrival for comparison. Image sample to follow, and here is the link to it on Google Sheets.

I think there's some really interesting stuff in there worth discussing, take a look, let me know what you think (I am open to requests for additional data addition as well, and please feel free to request formatting changes if you feel they will make it more readable). :thumb:

Seriously awesome work. To show our appreciation, I think the rest of us should chip in and pay for your next three-year subscription to IllinoisLoyalty. No no, we insist. You've earned it!

What stands out to me is Keats tempo compar d to Groces

Or Bennett's compared to everyone. I'm sure all the incessant winning would sooth me a bit, but I'd rather not watch a team with Tempo in the 340's every. single. year. ZZzzzzzz.

I love watching UVA play, honestly. That defense is smothering.

The offense is brutal to watch, though. Efficient, but painful.

If you think SFC is dead now, wait until they have to sit through those snoozefest offensive sequences.

Supporting a perennial top 15 team again would be a total snoozer.

However, If given the choice on how to accomplish such sustained success, I do agree on the more entertaining offensive style.

If Groce has to be replaced, it won't surprise me if Whitman goes after somebody with a high degree of intelligence.:thumb:

Gotta think some defense like that will at least turn into some transition opportunities. I wonder how much of his tempo is wanting to slowdown traditionally fast tempo acc teams. And we if hit the jackpot and he came here, if he would reverse it to speed up traditionally slower tempo big ten teams.

If Groce gets replaced whoever it is needs to be of the caliber to keep the recruits he has lined up. Other than that I don't really care.

You don't keep assistants if your move the HC.

Otherwise I say keep him.

I think it kind of depends regarding the assistants. If you are talking a very established guy like Cuonzo Martin then yes he will probably bring all his own assistants.

A guy like Keatts however has a very inexperienced staff. He may be willing to keep an experienced Big 10 assistant because his staff as is probably isn't Big 10 quality right now.

True, plus very often the mid major they are leaving will offer that head coaching job to one of the assistants to keep some continuity on that end. So he may have an opening on his staff via that route.

Lots of coaches do well with transfers. Groce just sucked at it and got unlucky with Cosby who was inexplicably terrible.

LongLurkandProsper what do you think about adding in actual conference finish by each year? Would be nice to compare that to the conference recruiting rankings. Could be a nice way of seeing if a coach is getting the most out of the talent they have coming in.

Depending on how the game goes, I can have that done probably today :thumb:

You don't think having a quality PG impacts the ability to get shots at the rim OR clean looks from 3? A good PG that can break down the defense, cause the defense to rotate or hedge, absolutely creates open shots at the rim or clean looks from 3.

Name one PG that Groce has had that could consistently do that?

We have yet to land a PG who can do that (not for a lack of trying) and that may ultimately lead to the end of the Groce era.

We can say, rightfully so, that the lack of good point guard pay is the reason we have struggled offensively. But frankly, our defense, is horrible & more of the reason (than offense) why we have been so bad.

Few, at Gonzaga, has played the transfer route substantially & has been very successful.

Yep. Keatts is an interesting case since he came from high school ranks and hasn't had as much time to develop college relationships with just a couple years at Marshall and few more at Louisville. One of his assistants is like 2 years removed from Hargrave as well.
