What about a return of Lon? He hasn't stayed at a job for more than 6 years in his career...

Nojo to Wojo

I agree on Wojo a couple of big time wins doesn't erase that he is just 13-13 in conference play the past two years and only 47-38 overall. I think he will be a good coach in a few years but we need someone who is ready now to take over and start winning next year!! I like swinging for the fences with Marshall and if he balks then hire Keatts or Counzo Martin.

Is there not any scenario where Donavon could be pried away from NBA and back to college? How much would it take? I'm sure it's beyond a long shot, but maybe something going on behind the scenes with him where he's tired of NBA guys. Seems college to NBA in coaching rarely works out, maybe we get lucky? I wish we know what our ceiling was in terms of $$$ to offer

I read an article a few months back where I guess Donovan is really worried about losing Westbrook to free agency which I think he will. That team isn't going anywhere so why stay there and coach a team that really has no shot of winning a title with the Spurs and Warriors in the way? I would definitely have JW kick the tires on Donovan to see if he throws some good $$ at him if he would leave the NBA? I doubt it but he has to explore it.

Good luck assembling a competitive offer to Billy Donovan, seeing as he's making 6 million a year in OKC. Not going to happen.

Well if donors want to yield all this power and scream to make changes, then pony up! I want Groce gone too, but all I ever hear about is donors and boosters and alums not being happy and threatening to withhold money. Well..... put up or shut up. Want a top 10 program, hire a top 10 coach and make him highest paid coach in BT and top 10 in country.

Coach K looks to be at 7.3 a year. Could we not offer a coach 6 over 5? 30 million investment not worth the possible rewards?

It would not be for Illinois.
He's making good money and if OKC adds a piece or two before Westbrook hits free agency again, things there could turn around quickly. Though OKC has a problem making a quick fix since it isn't much of a free agent destination. At any rate, if he leaves OKC, it will be for another NBA job or a higher level school than Illinois. He isn't jumping ship for a 50% pay cut and a struggling squad in Illinois. If he ever came back to college, he would have plenty of options and they would be either warmer weather, East coast, or Kentucky. If Cal leaves or retires at some point, Donovan is likely their first gauge of interest.

Im fairly sure nobody would have thought Lovie would have come to Illinois either. Especially since his NFL stock was still so high.

Honestly don't think he'd make a jump to Illinois. He has no connections here or to the Big 10. He can recruit the same areas and have as much a possibility of being successful where he is at. I don't see him going anywhere until an East Coast job opens or if he's considered for being Coach K's successor. At this point, if K left today, I suppose he would be behind Capel (probably still despite his "audition" this year) and Collins...maybe even Dawkins or Brey. I know Dawkins wasn't spectacular at Stanford but he did ok there and UCF is sitting at 14-5 right now after going 12-18 just last year. And Dawkins is well respected at Duke still.

Not sure if we could or could not pony up that amount, but seems like another issue is getting a $6M/year coach to want to come to Illinois.

Good points Cory and your probably right Donovan won't be interested in Illinois he will stay in OKC for a few more years and if he returns to college it will be at a top 10 program. So who really is in play? Does JW go hard after Marshall and offer him 4mm per year for 6 years? If he balks then go to Keatts or Martin? I really like the Keatts option we could get him with the right offer. Why would he go to Missouri they are in worse shape then Illinois.

The issue with donors is that between the last renovation of Memorial Stadium, the new renovation of Memorial Stadium, and the SFC renovation, our athletic department has been hitting up our donors a lot. Managing those donor relationships is tricky and only JW and others at the top of DIA really know how much we can tap into for a new coach.

I think the only way we spend huge on a coach is if JW gets word that one of these big fish could be tempted. Then JW can go to donors with a specific name and a plan for wooing them.

Has anyone thought about Bill Self?

He turned around a in the dumps Oral Roberts team and made the tournament. He then lead Tulsa to an elite 8. I think he used to coach at Illinois too, but is now coaching Kansas.

He's shown himself to be a good recruiter, not sure about the X's and O's but seems to get the job done on the court. I'm sure the donors could pony up the money to get him over here.

There's a hard to spell coach at Duke who's originally from Chicago. He's making a boat load of money, but I think with his Illinois ties we could get him on the cheap. Krscooski or something like.

you miss 100% of the shots you don't take, that's what I always say.

I heard Popovich likes to hike, Allerton is good for hiking, maybe we could offer him a ride into the sunset retirement job.

Hearing rumors that Phil Jackson is interested in trying out the triangle offense in college and wants the job.

Good points. I just wish we knew what we could be working with, in terms of $$. It would give us an idea of where we're possibly looking. Greg Marshall is a terrible idea, he would be a horrible fit and no way Chicago deals with him. His behavior this summer in Canada is enough to scare away JW in my opinion.
