This is great to hear, but at the same time, I find it odd. How do you host a recruit when your program is on fire? And a majority of the fanbase thinks you won't last two months? Will he meet Whitman? I sure hope so, as I'd imagine that's our best hope of him seriously considering us.

This could be awkward too. Yes I'm sure he'll meet Whitman, but spending more time while on campus with JW than most other recruits will basically give it away that Groce is gone after this season. It'll be an interesting line to walk.

And in terms of having him visit while the program is on fire... what choice do we have? The kid is blowing up and generating attention all over the country. We have to strike while the iron is hot.

Edit: It also helps that Tilmon is going to be visiting this weekend also.

"And it goes further. Duke has put in a call. So has another heavyweight. Ohio State and California are expected to be at the game on Friday."

Wonder if Martin is going to be in to watch Smith on Friday night (Cal is not playing Fri or Sat)? I'm sure it goes without saying that Whitman has to be an integral part of the recruiting visit on Saturday.

This kid is a MUST get!

I think this bracket I put together has most of the names mentioned in this thread.

I'm open to ideas on seeding and substitutions of names. I'm happy to update it.

Nice. Got a chuckle out of it. How you gonna score it?

Ohhhh haha, bleacher report put up an article about the next up and coming coaches and Matt McCall was number 2 or 3. I found him intriguing

Gotcha. Link?

(He keeps coming up, and my suspicion was because he beat us last year, I guess not in your case)

Bad week for McCall last week. Lost a tough one at East Tennessee State, who is the other team with an upwardly-mobile coach in that league, plus an absolutely brutal home loss to VMI.

There's still an upward trajectory there, and he's got the background for it, but I'm still not sure I see enough.

Between he and Will Wade (who is a frighteningly similar candidate) I'd go with Wade.

(Check out where Henson placed in conference in his first five years. T-7,6,7,7,T-6.)

Check out how many times Henson's teams were blown off of the court by 20+ during those 5 seasons.

Check out how many 19 loss seasons Henson had.

Check out Henson's longest streak of B1G road losses.

Check out the fact that if the NCAA Tourney had 68 teams in it when Henson was coaching, the Illini were likely in year 5 and possibly year 4 too.

Check into it. We'll be waiting for you to get back to us...

Hope Martin isn't because hopefully he is at the no chance of coaching here

He's been discussed in this thread a bit, the big thing holding him back is that he's already had a bad stint in the P5 at Iowa State. Just comes down to personal philosophy on if you can look past that or not.

If we want to go the same route as the football program consideration should be given to Mike Brown, He is the former coach of the Cavaliers and Lakers. he is currently the top assistant to Steve Kerr in San Diego.

The reason he was let go from Cleveland is that he would not let King James control him.

Steve Kerr!? In San Diego!?

When did that happen!???

Did Stephen Curry go with him too?

Oh crap! San Diego doesn't even have an NBA team!

Are the Warriors moving?

Why don't people ever tell me these things?:tsk:

Wade is a very similar candidate but would he leave VCU?

Why all the talk about these new up and comers from mid major conferences? Remember 5 years ago when some of you folks thought JG was going to be a great fit for our Illini? What a train wreck that decision was.

Let's all hope JW can procure the funds to hire a proven coach that is looking for a GREAT opportunity to lead an AWESOME P-5 basketball program back to greatness!! Someone who has a good track record big time recruiting and has coached up the talent he has acquired. There will be candidates and it will be all about the dollars.....

It can be done!! It MUST be done!!!!

All good P5 coaches started somewhere else. It is silly to disregard all other sources because our last mid-major coach turned out badly (reality check: most of the mid-major guys on our list have achieved much more at that level than Groce ever did).

Additionally, going after strictly other P5 coaches is an easy way to find yourself overpaying for a coach, IMO.

Or a good way to end up with Frank Haith.

There are more P5 coaches available than just Cuonzo.

Can I interest you in Mark Fox? How about Ernie Kent? Or maybe a gently used Brad Brownell?
I say we throw all our chips on the table and get Fat Pat Kennedy. All of the Chicago recruits, none of the results!

I'm not trying to save Groce; just saying Henson would not have lasted in today's environment. In fact, the new environment cost him a come back. Only finished in lower 1/2 of big two or three times after year 6.

Remember 17 years ago when we hired an up and comer from a mid major (Tulsa)? You're right, we don't want to make that kind of mistake again.

It's about getting the right guy, no matter where he's coming from.

I'm glad you're not hiring our next coach. Penny pinching got us Groce and Beckman.

You get what you pay for. We need the next coach to have an established major recruiting pedigree and the sense to surround himself with a superior staff.

Is that asking to much? I think not.

There's a difference between wanting to penny pinch and not wanting to overpay. To pry away P5 coaches, you're going to need to give them anywhere from a 250-750k raise to (1) move and (2) beat out any raises their current employer will try to offer to keep them. I've linked this before: 2016 NCAAT coaches salaries. Go through that list, take any P5 coach on there you like, and add 500k to their salary. Look at similar coaches in that salary + 500k range, are they comparable? Personally, paying Frank Martin 2.5 million feels downright stupid. Would he be an improvement over Groce? Yes. Are his results worth 2.5 million? No. Thus, we'd be overpaying. You mention a strong assistant pool, that's money too. There aren't a lot of good, unemployed assistants.

It would be a good, new exercise in this thread to go look at some coaches who are probably underpaid compared to value that we could try to buy, though. Who do you think is underpaid and what are they worth?

Yes a lot of people thought that John Groce was a good coach but you cant tell me that he was the guy that Illinois wanted he was atleast third maybe even fourth choice after shaka and brad stevens!!!!! So just cause we have had one bad experience with a mid-major hire doesn't mean mid-major coached cant coach on this level.....We just need the best guy for this program

Nice. Got a chuckle out of it. How you gonna score it?

Every time a coach gets a mention he scores a point? Start scoring on Sunday and each round lasts for a week. Winner at end of every week advances to the next round.

If I start this on Sunday, 6 rounds at 1 per week would get us to winner announced on 3/19, which is through the first weekend of the NCAAs. I could always push the start back a few days or a week if anyone is interested in filling out brackets.

Kevin "basketball god" Keatts for only $870M? I'd pay him twice, and I'd still get final 4 results for Aldi prices!

Keatts Hype Train just got faster!
