New wrap-around season has started, so time for a new thread. :)

Langley, Campbell and Danielson are playing in the Sanderson Farms PGA event this week. Charlie missed out on advancing to the 2nd stage of web.com Q school, so he'll have to rely on sponsor's exemptions and Monday qualifying this year. Langley has limited status this year, so he also needs to take advantage of any starts he gets.

Pieters is now in the OWGR top 50, so he gets into the HSBC WGC event in China. Big stage, good field though I wonder if he might still be a little drained from the Ryder Cup.

Thomas Detry is looking pretty good to earn his European Tour card for 2017, he's in 13th place on the Challenge Tour list, top 15 get cards.

Same as Langley, finished out of the top 150 so has very limited status. Both will probably end up on the web.com tour starting next spring. Luke had an outside chance to earn his card in the web.com playoffs but the last event was cancelled due to the hurricane.

The announcement of a two man team event for the New Orleans tour event is a step in the right direction. Will up the excitement level for this tourney for sure. Fowler and Day have already paired up as have Stenson and Rose. I'm guessing the Spring Break Boys will also pair up. Need an all Illini team as well.

Thomas Detry was ranked 1,802nd in the Official World Golf Rankings just over six months ago. He ended the year at a career high 195th after enjoying a mesmeric rise through the game, which saw the 23 year old turn professional, win a European Challenge Tour event, graduate to the European Tour and post a top three finish in his first European Tour start - all in the space of just six months.

From winning national championships, to competing in the Junior Ryder Cup, the former World Amateur Number Eight has been hotly-tipped as a future star in his home nation, and beyond, for some time.

Pieters making his 2017 PGA Tour debut this weekend, back to a place he had great success at as an Illini.

The last time Belgian Thomas Pieters played at Riviera Country Club he beat Justin Thomas by five and destroyed Jordan Spieth by 13 shots.

On his way to a three shot win at the 2012 Individual NCAA Division I title, Pieters, then playing for the University of Illinois, also bested plenty of other names you may recognize like Brooks Koepka, Mackenzie Hughes and Cody Gribble, just to name a few.

While the most celebrated takeaway from the championship was Spieth’s Texas Longhorns winning the team final against Thomas’ Alabama Crimson Tide, Pieters had announced himself to the hardcore golf audience.

Loved that they mentioned him winning the NCAA for University of Illinois during the telecast. Believe he ended up T2, which is a heck of an achievement. Congrats, TP !

Doing some checking and it looks like Pieters is really close to getting provisional status for the rest of the PGA tour season. Just needs another decent showing in the Honda Classic coming up this week and he'll get there. Also not much further to go to earn a 2018 card, too.

I'm lacking some of the knowledge around earning and holding PGA Tour cards. Care to fill in the blanks for me?

I know that generally playing well will earn you a card and that there are sponsor's exemptions and medical exemptions, but what are some of the specific requirements for earning a card and what is Thomas' provisional status case?

The traditional path was to go to Q school (a 6 round tournament) and if you did well enough, you would earn a tour card for the following season. Around 5 years ago, they changed the path so that Q school earned you a spot on the web.com tour instead. Then if you finished in the top 25 on the web.com season, you got a PGA tour card.

The other way is how a guy like Jordan Spieth made it and what Thomas is doing. If you can get a sponsor invite to an event and do well enough, then you can get a card. You have to earn enough FedEx cup points to equal the amount earned by last year's #150 finish. For last year, that was 319 points. If you reach that number then you can get special temporary status, which means you have unlimited exemptions into events. If you can then earn enough prize money to equal the total of #125 from last season, you earn a card for the next season. That's how Jon Rahm got his card for this season. Thomas got 245 points from the Genesis tournament and he also got 61 points from an HSBC event previously, so he just needs another 13 points. Probably a top 40 or so finish in the Honda would do it.

To keep your card you have to finish in the top 125. The guys who finish 126-200 have to play in the web.com finals events (4 tournaments) vs the top 75 from web.com. The top 25 in that event get tour cards for the next season.

A few corrections:

Stricker has PGA tour status and seems to be playing a similar limited schedule as the past few years. Also eligible for Tour Champions so will probably play some of those events.

Guthrie has web.com status, currently 31st on the money list so is doing OK there. Langley doesn't have equal status there so he's going to have to do well in the events he does get in.

Campbell and Points both have PGA tour cards. But they haven't played very well early on and the tour just did the first "re-shuffle" for priority status and they've both dropped down as a result. So they have lower priority in getting into the tour fields. They are both playing today in the Monday qualifier for the Honda Classic and Campbell is also the 3rd alternate in case some players end up dropping out.

I think Affrunti's career is over.

Danielson didn't make it through Q school to get on web.com so he doesn't have any status. Will likely try to Monday qualify and maybe get a few sponsor's exemptions into some events. He tried to Monday qualify this week but didn't get through the pre-qualifier.

Pieters T-2 in L.A. had a $600k payoff, great start for his career in addition to his Ryder Cup outstanding play. My guess is full time on PGA tour in two years. Although the new Euro commissh is being very progressive on keeping the stars on his tour.
