I think Matheny did the right thing by bringing in his best reliever in that situation. The closer role is way too defined. You want your best pitcher in the best situations.

However - leaving him in be 9th. No idea. I assume the off day is why.

I wouldn't have minded leaving him in for the 9th if he was cruising, however, he clearly wasn't. Matheny should have had someone else warming up just in case. If Oh cruises and doesn't need to be pulled, great! If he doesn't, you have someone ready at the first sign of trouble.

The good thing about an off day is not necessarily that it allows you to stretch one reliever, it's that you don't have to stretch anyone because theoretically if you use multiple relievers, they will all be rested by the next game.

Oh I completely agree. I was just saying what I think Matheny was thinking. I actually loved the move to bring Oh in with that situation. I probably would have gone to someone else in the 9th.

Piscotty got absolutely beaten up in that final at-bat he took.

I know it. Man, what a tough night for him. I hope he is ok. He gets hit by a pitch, gets hit again while sliding into second and then gets beamed by Biaz sliding into home. I wouldn't be surprised if his bell is still ringing after that.

I see Johnny "K"ralta showed up tonight.

Will be a long season if Peralta is the answer for the 4th slot in the batting order. I know Piscotty was projected there and had a bad spring. I also know there were big boppers available cheap this past off season.

Yep. Gotta get somebody else there in the cleanup spot, whether it's Piscotty or Grichuk coming through or someone else is acquired in a trade or pick-up.

Was diagnosed with a head contusion. Wouldn't have played today if the game hadn't been rained out and is doubtful for the make-up game tomorrow.

Friend of mine at work whose a Cubs fan says he got hit by that Baez fastball on that play at the plate.

Bullpen has been horrible, offense hasn't been there (really need someone to step up in the 4 spot), Matt Adams is not a LF, and we still have Matheny.

Not a great start.

Nailed it. Man, this stinks, ill be honest. The pen is uuugaaaly. Its crazy tjat rosie was the lone bright spot. The ofense is not very good right now either. Its hars to watch tjis after a very strong spring.

Matheny better get this figured out fast or it will be a repeat of last year!

Super early but I have a feeling this is going to be the exact same situation as last year and Mozeliak is going to have to make a decision. Last year he didn't do anything. This year I hope he makes moves one way or the other. Make some upgrades or get rid of some guys for prospects.

I do like the makeup of this team. Fowler, Diaz, Carpenter is a great 1-3. And we have some depth in our lineup. Not sure why Piscotty isn't in the 4 hole everyday. Let him grow there and see what he can do. Adams and Peralta there...really? Problem is we have a lot of average or above average players. If the team doesn't gel and become more than the sum of its parts I just don't see anymore than maybe a second wild card.

Wong is a head case, we really need Grichuk and Piscotty to take the next step, and hope our SP stay healthy and pitch consistently. I think the bullpen will work itself out talent wise problem is you have Matheny leading that group so that deflated my feelings there.

Hoping they can string some wins together and get some momentum going as I have a feeling it could turn into a grinder of a season pretty quick if not.

Please, keep Cardinals great Lou Brock in your thoughts and prayers as he battling a cancer called Multiple Myeloma. It is a dreadful disease as all cancers are, but he will be in for a fight. My father in law was diagnosed with this cancer 2 years ago and it has been quite a journey that has included a stem cell transplant, kidney failure(which they have since come back to functioning fully), a tremendous amount of rehab, and emotional strain. New research is coming out everyday and I fully believe Lou and my Father in Law will beat this thing down and continue to live a great life.

I think we will be sellers at the break. We aren't very good.

Another one run loss. This is bad....:(

I missed most of tonight's ball game. Saw Adams bat as DH late. Assuming he was DH all game. How do you not DH Martinez? He's hot and Adams is not! And how has Adams been ahead of him in RF in other starts?

I'm about done with Matheny.

Yes, Adams was DH the whole game: 0 for 4, 2 strikeouts, 4 LOB's. He's now hitting a cool .174. Frankly, I was "done" with Matheny a long time ago.

So what's the best exit strategy for a manager this early in the year?

I've been low on Mo for quite awhile. Really thought Luhnow was the key to our engine. Somewhat confirmed with the scandal but I think at this point Matheny falls first.

well, thats two in a row - this young season's first win streak. Leake is looking pretty solid right now, thank goodness. Wacha up tomorrow. It would be nice to get the sweep and be tied for last place in the central rather than being the cheese that stands alone.

Not sure even if we sweep it will change my feels about this horrid start to the season.
