Good story in the Post saying last year was the first year since something like 1976 that we didn't have at least one player with a >4 WAR. This year will be second time. We've known for awhile we needed another bat. Bullpen sucks.

I'll go A,B and C all share equally.

At the end of the day, it's the players fault for not executing. 10% is probably high for Matheny, but I just don't like him. Mozeliak put together a roster that should win around 85-88 games and be in contention for the wildcard, rather have that boom and bust.

20%
40%
40%

Need another category for inept coaching staff. Since Oquendo disappeared, the D, hitting, and especially base running has plummeted.

Why do you like this roster so much? Heyward got a peek inside this organization and declared it not well built to compete. Not that he's a great authority but he was in the middle of it all.

For two years the media and fans have been screaming for some help in the middle of the order.

PECOTA had us for 76 wins this season. Seemed low at the time.

ZIPS had no one on this roster with a WAR over 3.1 which translates into very average. Carlos is a would be All Star this year if he got some run support but that's about it.

These changes are a good first step. Now they need to push some $$$ in and gets some lumber.

OTOH I don't blame Mo for believing that Piscotty was going to play at an All-star level batting clean up, Diaz would have another strong year, Carpenter would be his normal self batting 3rd, and Grichuk would be solid batting 5th. All those guys are under-performing right now. Add one of Rosenthal or Oh being lights out and Mo might have pictured us having 4 or 5 All Stars.

Obviously that hasn't happened, but I don't blame him for thinking it would. I will blame if he doesn't change it but he will...he's already started. This will be a different team come August I guarantee. The only question is if it will be able to win now or if Mo has to think a year or two ahead.

It's a collection of 2-3 win players (arguably) at every single position. The upside is Carpenter (who will hit and will end up above that), Piscotty and Diaz. Gyroko is going to end up more of a 4 win player, which is the unplanned and pleasant surprise. That PECOTA win total was low, and this should be a 87 win plus or minus 2 or so win team, which is perfectly acceptable for wild card contention. The starting pitching is very good and the Cardinals also have arguably the best/ deepest minor league pitching staff in the league, which is a huge help and will bolster the bullpen/ rotation for years to come.

Heyward took the most valuable free agent contract, which is how 99% of free agent signings work, the rest was just window dressing.

You know who else wants middle of the order help? Every single other team, it's not as easy as just identifying a guy and he's magically on the roster.

Mid to high 80 win teams on a relatively cost efficient roster is what the Cardinals should be shooting for over the next 2-3 years until their position player talent in the minors matures (there is some talent, it's just far away). You're realistically not going to catch the Cubs (on paper) over the time frame by going out and trading for big expensive names or signing big expensive name free agents. There's a reason the Cardinals haven't won less than 86 games since Mozeliak has been the head of the regime.

What would make it all more palatable for me is not seeing an incompetent boob like Matheny as manager, but arguably the moves they made last week was the first step to removing him if things don't change.

I think Carp's best days are in the rear view mirror. Hope I'm wrong but his issues with his back make hitting tough.

Cardinals place Fowler and Siegrist on DL, recall Grichuk as well as RHP Mike Mayers and purchase the contract of 1B Luke Voit from Memphis, and demote OF Chad Huffman to Memphis.

Is this the case of a guy failing at his job so you promote him to get him out of the way?

I guess making the playoffs 6 of his 9 seasons as GM, in addition to 2 pennants and a championship is failing. It's quite amazing how spoiled we are as a fan base.

This is how bluebloods must feel in basketball.

Matheny is in over his head, and Oquendo was more effective than anybody imagined, evidently.

Mo hired Matheny and let this roster dwindle to average either by missing on the young guys he bet on or leaning on aging All Stars.

If it's Matheny, the Cards just extended him last fall. If it's the players, they are on MO's tenure. Strange timing for a promotion when everyone was put on notice.

We are most definitely spoiled. I really felt like Jockety had us setup for the early success and I think it was a good move to let Pujols go. However, it simply feels the talent level has steadily declined and particularly in select areas, like defense. I just think the slippage has more to do with who Mo has picked than how Matheny has coached.

true , But night after night it is obvious at the late , on the bases and in the field this team either isn't being taught fundamentals. Or they are not being enforced.
The odd thing is Matheny as I remember as aplayer excelled at fundamentals.

To me , the problem with this team is they don't have an identity. They aren't a slugging team, high average team, base stealing team, contact team that manufactures runs. No great rotation. No great bullpen. Defense is mediocre across the board.
The lineup lacks true 3-4-5 hitters. And they strikeout at a high rate ,especially for the lack of production on the flipside

I honestly think Mo is pretty good at his job. I think Matheny was a good player and teammate but he doesnt know how to lead the team as a manager. He still wants to be liked by his guys as if he were still a player, "one of the guys". He's loyal to them to a fault. He needs to put on his big boy pants and start managing. If he cant do it, then lets find someone who can. Right now hes our biggest obstacle to overcome. JMO.
